Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the guidance of the Corporate AVP of Infection Prevention, the Director Infection Prevention serves a leader in aligning HCA's key strategies in reducing infections as well as a primary support for HCA and all of its entities. Responsible for establishing mission, vision, goals and direction for effective infection prevention and control programs for hospitals and outpatient services for the division. Functions as main source of IP contact for division, facilities and key stakeholders. Serves as a subject matter expert for the entity.

Leads development of strategies and tools to advance clinical performance within infection prevention and control across the enterprise. Assures appropriate alignment of improvement, growth, compliance, and technology advances within infection prevention and control.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Promotes the mission and strategic approach to developing, operationalizing, and sustaining a strong infection prevention program for the enterprise under the guidance of the AVP, Infection Prevention. Creates a safe environment for all division entities, free from infections by integrating clinical skills with expert knowledge.

Standards:

Assists in implementing the Infection Prevention mission/vision statement and strategic plan for the Infection Prevention Programs across the system

Delivers goals, objectives and action plans in accordance with HCA Infection Prevention mission and strategic initiatives to decrease healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and any exposures to infectious agents.

Prioritizes objectives to align with strategic initiatives and budgets; keeps entity programs focused on clinical priorities.

Works closely with divisions and facilities in assuring standards are consistently met and operationalized.

Evaluates progress and revises plans as needed

Partners with stakeholders in developing meaningful HAI scorecards and dashboards including validation in accordance with clinical goals.

Serves as a leader for NHSN, data mining entities, and other applications within the IP space. Serves as system NHSN (National Healthcare Safety Network) Facility Administrator for purposes of internal surveillance, accurate and timely public reporting and CMS compliance. Leader in supporting facilities selected for CMS audit activities.

Standards:

Utilizes software to support successful reporting and resolve reporting gaps including TheraDoc, NHSN, PowerBI, etc.

Manages reporting changes associated with software applications including TheraDoc, NHSN, PowerBI, etc.

Develops resources and communicates reporting changes to stakeholders

Performs quality assurance data checks and monitors reporting mismatches

Leads NHSN unit location mapping and manages enterprise master location list

Supports CMS audit case related activities, lead analyses on mismatch outcomes and develops interventions to minimize mismatch risk.

3. Directs and coordinates infection prevention and control program through a variety of activities involving medical staff and personnel to ensure protection of patients, families, visitors, employees and healthcare personnel.

Standards:

Develops and implements a risk-based surveillance system that identifies trends in healthcare associated infections and provides direction for surveillance activities.

Provides analysis and reporting of infection data, developing action plans and interventions, and assessing success of actions in follow-up.

Delivers, with key stakeholders, data-driven, cost-effective interventions to reduce healthcare associated infections and occupational exposures, and facilitates implementation of interventions.

Consults with facilities regarding infection rates, exposures, outbreaks and other infection prevention and control issues.

Provides administrative direction to AVP to ensure that surveillance programs and interventions to reduce infections and occupational exposures are supported by scientific research, or are innovative but based on sound principles of epidemiology and knowledge of disease transmission, and demonstrate potential for improving clinical outcomes and decreasing costs were possible.

Evaluates in partnership with IP leaders, effectiveness of infection prevention and control plan and programs and recommends changes as needed.

Provides direction in areas of questions regarding room placement and isolation techniques for management of infectious patients.

Collaborates with facility and/or enterprise Workforce Health and Safety in following up on employee infections, exposures to infectious patients, and in developing and implementing policies related to infection prevention and management of healthcare personnel with infectious conditions.

Act as support for the EEOC for any infectious disease agents or disasters that impact IP for HCA entities; directs and determines need for personnel and environmental cultures in context of epidemiologic investigations.

In conjunction with leadership, integrates infection prevention and control measures into newly offered patient care service lines.

Directs review process of policies and procedures for infection prevention and control.

Initiates and conducts environmental rounds of site and remote outpatient settings as needed to identify and give direction for opportunities to improve in partnership with HCA clinical and regulatory programs.

Acts as an expert resource for Communications/Marketing on infection prevention and control related topics under the guidance of the AVP and Chief Epidemiologist.

Serves on key committees to improve clinical processes across the enterprise as representative for infection prevention and control.

Serves as regulatory chapter expert for Joint Commission Standards and state standards on Surveillance, Prevention and Control of Infections.

4. Assists with and provides administrative direction and organization for all epidemic investigations occurring at facilities related to healthcare associated or community-acquired infections and/or occupational exposures in order to assure necessary patient safety and risk management practices are addressed following evidence-based guidance and regulatory requirements.

5. Provides guidance for the coordination, development and education and educational materials regarding disease transmission and evidence-based guidance for infection prevention and control for all system entities. Performs creation of new and updates to corporate playbooks for infection prevention and control.

6. Provides consultation to medical staff (MEC) and leadership at all levels under direction of the AVP, Infection Prevention

Standards:

Maintains effective communication to keep corporate senior leadership, medical staff, sponsors, and stakeholders informed of infection prevention and control plans, activities and progress in meeting goals and objectives.

Updates AVP and Chief Epidemiologist about infection prevention and control issues as encountered at facilities

Serves as administrative expert consultant to leadership, medical staff, sponsors and stakeholders on matters related to infection prevention and control including surveillance, epidemiology, outcomes measurement, quality/performance improvement and employee health.

Acts as a facility resource in developing effective infection prevention and control programs and policies.

Serves as facility liaison with regional and state public agencies and the CDC, and seeks expertise as needed.

Serves as administrative support for all standards and regulatory requirements as it relates to infection prevention and control.

Act as support for risk management with infection prevention and control construction planning, design and risk assessment.

6. Under AVP leadership, directs facility performance improvement process and reporting for infection prevention and control

7. Coordinates medical and hospital research projects across the enterprise regarding infection prevention and control issues, outcomes and cost-benefit studies. Actively participates in HCA supported research projects, assigning resources and coaching participating study units.

8. Assists with human resources management within areas of responsibility to achieve quality services and maintain positive employee relations for facility infection preventionists.

9. Promotes professional development of self and division entities

10. Maintains a working knowledge of and provides information to ensure compliance with rules, regulations and recommendations from Federal, State, and accrediting agencies as they relate to infection prevention and control across division entities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


•Master's degree or higher in a healthcare clinical or healthcare administration-related field.


•Current state license (if in state requiring profession license).


•Current Certification in Infection Control (CIC).


•Skills and abilities to include Microsoft applications ( PowerPoint, Excel, forms, etc.); creates presentations and communications for AVP and stakeholders


• Requires at least 30% travel
