UMGCCC is accepting nominations/applications for co-leader of the UMGCCC Population Science (PS) Program. The PS Program is one of five research programs within UMGCCC including, Experimental Therapeutics, Tumor Immunology & Immunotherapy, Molecular and Structural Biology, and Hormone Related Cancers.

The co-leader should ideally be an NIH funded investigator, at the associate professor level or above. The co-leader will be a member of UMGCCC senior leadership team and will join an in-place co-leader with expertise in behavioral sciences to jointly lead the PS program. The co-leader position carries significant leadership responsibilities within UMGCCC.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have an established track record of peer-reviewed extramural research funding and national/international reputation as evidenced by service on national, regional, and local organizations and societies.
  • Possess strategic and innovative thinking abilities to identify research gaps and anticipate research directions and opportunities.
  • Have exceptional leadership and mentorship skills to advance careers of faculty, trainees, and staff.
  • Foster awareness and support of cancer center initiatives to support inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and cancer health equity efforts throughout the institution.
  • Demonstrate ability to understand and advance the needs of the population of UMGCCC's catchment area through population science research.
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills.

In accordance with NCI guidelines, responsibilities of the co-leader include effective scientific leadership that provides intellectual stimulation, cohesion, focus, and direction and promotes research that has a high degree of clinical, scientific, and/or policy impact; stimulation of interactions within the Program, with other Research Programs at the (Cancer) Center, and with researchers at other institutions that lead to collaborative research projects, joint publications, colloquia, joint seminar series, and other evidence of meaningful interchange around related or common goals; and exercise good judgement in use of funds to support these and other scientific activities

The UMGCCC PS Program conducts multidisciplinary research to identify determinants of cancer etiology, cancer-related behaviors, and cancer outcomes and translate basic discoveries into behavioral cancer prevention and control interventions. PS members have made key contributions to molecular epidemiology and risk assessment, cancer communication, implementation science, and cancer survivorship that have impacted cancer in the catchment area and beyond. The program has unique strengths and a significant emphasis on reducing cancer disparities by working directly with populations in the UMGCCC catchment area. The three aims of the PS program are:

  1. Epidemiology of infection- & hormone-related cancers -- To identify the molecular, genetic, and lifestyle determinants of infection- and hormone-related cancers in the United States and globally.
  2. Equity in cancer prevention & early detection -- To identify psychosocial influences on cancer-related health behaviors and develop and evaluate interventions to foster recommended cancer-related behaviors. Especially among underserved populations.
  3. Cancer outcomes -- To identify mechanisms of cancer treatment-related pain and to characterize individual, treatment, and community level influences on disparities in cancer outcomes.

The Population Science Program includes researchers from the University of Maryland Baltimore Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Social Work, and Law; University of Maryland College Park Schools of Public Health, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Natural and Mathematical Sciences, and Engineering; University of Maryland Baltimore County College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; and Morgan State University Schools of Community Health and Policy and Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences. Cancer researchers with diverse expertise from these institutions work together to further the mission of UMGCCC.
