Position Information

Description & Details:

The Wildland Fire Training Technician (Engine Captain) develops and delivers local and regional fire department training to provide firefighter certifications and to supplement State Fire School courses. The technician provides wildland fire training instruction that focuses on local volunteer fire department needs and Statewide Interoperable Radio Network (SIRN) training to enhance firefighter and public safety. The technician participates in wildland fire suppression, preparedness, and prevention activities in and out-of-state to strengthen NDFS mutual aid support to fire departments. The technician assists with programs that provide funding and equipment to build local rural fire department wildland firefighting capacity . The position works closely with the Cooperative Fire Training Technician and reports to the Cooperative Fire Program Lead Technician.

Work Schedule: M - F 8 a.m. - 5p.m. Evening and weekend hours required.

Advertised Salary: $47,934 + DOE

Minimum Qualifications:
24 months of wildland fire management curriculum and/or experience. Knowledge of wildland fire behavior and suppression. Valid Driver's License.Current successful completion of the Work Capacity Test at the Arduous Level.NWCG certified as a FFT1, or NDFA FF2 or National equivalent qualification. Core competencies: Understand wildfire behavior and suppression techniques. Understand the effect of terrain, weather and fuels wildfire behavior. Safely and effectively operate wildland fire engines, hand tools and power tools. Build productive relationships and work cooperatively with others across and within boundaries. Communicate professionally with various audiences. Plan and manage work projects. Engage in respectful/professional deliberation and discussion. Work outdoors in all types of weather and safely traverse rough terrain. Enter, organize, maintain and summarize data using computer applications. Work flexible and extended hours, travel alone, stay overnight, and work in remote and rural areas. Work safely and follow policies, procedures, codes and standards. Work safely, adhering to the ten standard fire orders and aware of the eighteen "watch out" situations to prevent injury or loss of life.

Preferred Qualifications:
Associate's Degree in wildland fire management and three years of experience. Experience working with rural fire departments. Experience teaching or instructing wildland fire classes. Experience leading crews on fire suppression incidents. Experience with GIS. NWCG Engine Boss Qualification. NWCG ICT4 Qualification.

The North Dakota Forest Service (NDFS) is part of North Dakota State University and is the state agency which administers cooperative forestry programs statewide. The agency provides technical assistance relating to the management of private forest lands, state forest lands, urban and community forests, tree planting, and wildfire protection. The agency works in cooperation with rural landowners, urban residents, communities, rural fire districts, schools, and other government entities to direct and strengthen forestry services. The Forest Service also operates a tree seedling nursery and manages its own state forest lands. The Fire Management Program reduces the risk of loss of lives, property and natural resources to wildfire by providing fire suppression assistance, training, and equipment to 378 ND fire departments, and by responding to fire suppression assistance requests nationally when conditions in ND allow.
