Cleveland, Ohio, United States Birchwood School of Hawken Full time

THE POSITION

Birchwood School of Hawken is seeking a Middle School Reading and Language Arts teacher who is committed to teaching the total child. We seek candidates eager for intellectual and professional growth who are also able to contribute their own expertise in working with Lower and Middle School learners. The current teaching load for this position is only .5 FTE, but the position could be full-time depending upon the preferences and qualifications of our top candidates. We are hoping to grow the school's capacity for learning enhancement (working with students individually for both remediation and "no ceilings"), so the part-time teaching load may be extended to include learning enhancement up to a full-time load.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead-teach a section of sixth grade language arts (writing) as well as a section of sixth grade reading
  • Serve as a member of the language arts and reading teams, responsible for developing, planning, and implementing the curriculum
  • Serve as an in-school tutor for students who need help to raise their floor or their ceiling in a particular subject area (learning enhancement)
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with students and families
  • Minimal after-school hours required
  • Perform any other non-teaching duties as assigned by the Director of Curriculum or Head of School Because Birchwood School of Hawken believes in supporting teachers' passions, in deepening their expertise, and in fueling their spirit of innovation, we provide substantive professional development opportunities that lead to the kinds of excellence that are a hallmark of our community. QUALIFICATIONS
    • A Bachelor of Arts or equivalent experience in teaching language arts and/or reading to 5th- to 8th-grade learners
    • Preference for candidates with at least two years of experience
    • Preference for teachers open to accessing multiple teaching philosophies and practices
    • Candidates should be comfortable in generative collaboration with a team and should be comfortable with lengthy mentoring
    • Candidates must have: strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, energy, creativity, high expectations, and a sense of humor
    • A joyful enthusiasm for their age-level learners and an exceptional understanding of their developmental needs
    • Candidates should be willing and eager to assist in the life of the School THE SCHOOL:

Birchwood School was founded in 1984 by a small group of parents and educators living in Cleveland, Ohio. These founders were determined to give their own children an unparalleled education that offered exceptional academic programming and an emphasis on achievement ethics, hard work and character. Over the next three decades, the school grew into an award-winning institution that remained true to its founding mission: to provide an educational setting where challenging academics build solid work habits, an achievement culture nurtures healthy attitudes, and a caring environment forges social responsibility. In addition, the school functions outside of the traditional grade-level, lock-step approach to programming. This approach allows students to engage in academic work that is commensurate with their abilities, allowing them to maximize their cognitive abilities. Birchwood School of Hawken has proudly been part of Hawken School since their 2016 merger.

      HOW TO APPLY:

Qualified applicants should send a cover letter, resume, and references to or to:
