This position involves teaching English classes to students in grade 9 (course emphasis is hero figures in literature), grade 10 (course emphasis in American literature), and/or grade 11 (course emphasis is British literature). This position begins August 1, 2024. Specific Duties Include:
  • Writing and carrying out a program of study prescribed in the English curriculum, including both American and British literature
  • Creating a learning environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interests, and learning styles of the students
  • Having a thorough knowledge of grammar and understanding its importance to the class and to student writing
  • Managing student behavior in a manner that optimizes the learning environment
  • Maintaining regular communication with students and their parents regarding progress
  • Working cooperatively with other grade-level teachers to develop instructional materials that are most appropriate for meeting curricular objectives
  • Displaying a willingness to follow school and departmental procedures and regulations

Required Skills:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills demonstrating tact and diplomacy
  • Competency with basic word processing, spreadsheets, and internet
  • A solid understanding of learning challenges as well as the accommodations and differentiated learning techniques to support students' needs
  • Strong organizational and classroom management skills

Minimum Job Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in English or English Education from an accredited institution of higher learning; master's degree in English or education preferred
  • 3+ years of successful teaching high school English preferred
  • Independent school experience preferred, but not required
The Teacher, Upper School English position is an exempt, salaried, ten month position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Benefits are substantial. EOE
