Equine Medicine and Surgery Rotating Internship

Stillwater, United States Oklahoma State University, College of Veterinary Medicine Full time

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Oklahoma State University is offering a rotating internship position in Equine Medicine and Surgery beginning June 17, 2024 through June 30, 2025. The internship is designed to provide a broadly based clinical experience that will prepare the intern for equine practice, residency in an equine clinical program, or further graduate studies. Salary: 30,000/yr.

Responsibilities:
The intern will work closely with faculty clinicians that will provide direct supervision, training, and mentoring. Increasing responsibility and independence is allowed as proficiency in clinical skills and judgment is demonstrated. The intern will assist in the instruction and supervision of veterinary students in clinical rotations and laboratories. Clinical duties will include night and weekend emergency duty and inpatient critical care for equine cases and is shared with up to 4 other house officers. The intern will be allowed elective time (6 weeks) to gain additional experience in specialty areas such as ophthalmology, radiology, food animal medicine and surgery, and theriogenology. Each week offers rounds, journal club, in house combined case rounds with food animal medicine house officers, Morbidity and mortality rounds with all large animal faculty, and house officer seminars including all house officers and clinical faculty. Opportunities for participation in clinical research may be provided based on the interests and abilities of the intern. Our diverse hospital population is influenced by the substantial performance horse industry (roping, working cow horse, reining, cutting, barrel racing horses) and thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing industries within the state. Other smaller populations such as miniature and draft horses add variety to the case load.

Emergency Duty :
The intern will provide primary emergency service after hours, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis with up to four other house officers. A senior clinician will always be available either on-site or as backup.

Benefits :
Benefits include annual leave, sick leave, and medical insurance. Annual leave consists of two weeks (10 weekdays) and one week during the Christmas/New Year holidays. Medical insurance begins the first day of the month following your employment date. Depending on the coverage you select, you may be charged a monthly fee for your medical insurance. Professional liability is covered by the Tort Claims Act.

As part of the OSU Employee Wellness Program, interns have access to a wide range of programs including a university-paid fitness membership to the Colvin Center and the Seretean Wellness Center. Both facilities offer equipment, classes, and recreational activities. For more information, visit the OSU Department of Wellness website at .

Additional Expenses :
You will be required to pay for a faculty license ($125) through the state of Oklahoma and must have passed the NAVLE exam prior to beginning the internship. Parking permits are required to park near the teaching hospital. The approximate cost of the parking permit is $163.00 per academic year.
