Full-time position available on or after June 1, 2024 for Theatre.

The Technical Director of Scenery and Staging Operations Plays a pivotal role in overseeing all aspects of scenic construction and coordinates technical elements for departmental productions. Responsibilities include developing construction processes, creating schedules, supervising student crews, maintaining performance and production spaces, and managing production schedules and meetings.

Job Duties
Duties include but are not limited to: Utilize technical skills and production knowledge to build scenery properties based on
design specifications.
Operate and maintain stage equipment, ensuring functionality and safety standards are met.
Inspect, repair, and perform regular maintenance on riggings and equipment to uphold safety standards.
Collaborate with students and faculty to understand production goals and coordinate technical aspects.
Participate in production planning meetings and design components for stage productions.
Determine the need for and coordinate the acquisition of stage supplies.
Maintain schedules for stage facilities and productions to ensure smooth operations.
Provide creative and technical consultation, offering leadership and direction on production issues.
Assist in budget preparation, conduct cost analyses, and manage vendor relationships.
Provide lead work direction and serve as a production technical and operational director when necessary.
Regularly interact and coordinate with faculty, staff, and students, providing technical
consultation as needed for specific productions.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Entry to the first level within this classification requires one to two years of experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty such as costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, and/or sound/audio production. This background normally would be achieved through professional training or applicable college coursework and practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Theater or related field.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in theatrical, cinema/TV, or scenic production, with at least 2 years in a leadership capacity overseeing production operations.
Experience operating automated scenery systems, such as fly systems, motorized set pieces or automated rigging.
Experience with Vectorworks (or similar) CAD software.
Experience with CNC software and equipment or other forms of rapid prototyping (e.g. 3D printing).
Experience in coordinating and managing multiple productions and projects, including budget preparation, cost analyses, and vendor management.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Ability to support classroom instruction by performing classroom demonstrations related to production specialty.
Ability to work with faculty and provide training and supervision to students involved in productions.
Comprehensive knowledge of the methods and problems in multiple production specialties.
Comprehensive knowledge of design theory and principles and how they are executed in various production specialties.
Working knowledge of directing and stage management, including the ability to manage staging needs for productions requiring numerous costume and set changes and the ability to manage and coordinate the use of multiple facilities.
Thorough and in-depth knowledge of the technical aspects of construction, implementation, and operation of staging materials and effects in the various production specialties, including the ability to work with drawings and plots to assist in their execution.
Comprehensive knowledge of safety measures and hazards related to theatre productions.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with individuals at all levels within the organization.
Thorough and specialized knowledge and experience in applicable production specialty. More sophisticated knowledge of design theory and principles to be able to translate design specifications, blueprints or drawings into scene, lighting or sound production and effects.
Ability to independently manage production support projects and productions by breaking segments into working units that coincide with production needs.
Ability to work on more complex projects/designs and to work with more difficult materials and equipment, including the ability to select and use the most appropriate materials to meet production needs.
Ability to use more complex features of applicable software packages for production specialty.
Ability to plan the layout and use of work areas.
Thorough knowledge of safety requirements and standards related production support specialty and stage operations and ability to train others in safety measures and ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
Comprehensive knowledge of historical periods for design and construction of materials and effects related to applicable production specialty.

Special Conditions

Occasionally required to work nights and weekends as needed.

License or Certifications

Valid California Driver's License.

Salary Range
Anticipated salary will be $4,176 - $5,417 per month plus excellent paid benefits. Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist. (Full Performing Arts Tech III range: $4,176 - $ 7,557 per month)
