As the Technical Lead for Health Data Science, you'll develop technology at the core of the business. In collaboration with clinicians, research scientists, and product managers, the Health Data Science team builds features that enable members to improve their health and better understand their bodies. Leveraging various data sources to combine WHOOP data with "gold standard" truth data, as well as drawing upon clinical theory and evidence, you will lead a team to design, train, and deploy machine learning algorithms to provide insights to members on a wide range of topics. Your team's work will span the spectrum from general wellness features to regulated Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) projects. You'll work closely with the software, regulatory, and clinical teams on designing, implementing, and maintaining processes for the development life cycle of SaMD applications, including defining design inputs, architecting and training clinical algorithms, developing testing frameworks, writing model documentation, and conducting clinical validation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead a team of data scientists in developing algorithms that power member-facing features, managing a portfolio of projects in various stages of development at any given time
  • Develop statistical and machine learning models to solve complex problems with data of varying structures
  • Manage and mentor other data scientists on technical skills and paths for career growth
  • Conduct research on specific health and physiological problems and integrate clinical research into the development of algorithms
  • Work within Quality Management System framework, creating system requirements for development and robust documentation of model architecture and training processes
  • Collaborate with software and regulatory teams to design and implement testing frameworks for SaMD features
  • Periodically serve as the on-call data scientist to respond in real time to incidents affecting production services
  • Reports to the Director of Data Science for Health, Sleep & Research

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field. Master's or PhD preferred.
  • 5+ years of full-time professional experience in a related area, applying advanced mathematical and statistical techniques
  • Experience working on SaMD applications, including defining and implementing software requirements, documenting training processes, and developing within a quality management system
  • Experience deploying services and maintaining live code through logging and monitoring within a production environment
  • Strong python programming skills and substantial experience with scientific python packages
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Prior management or mentorship experience is preferred
  • Experience working with processed physiological time series data such as that from PPG, ECG, or EEG sensors is a plus
