Position Summary
The Program in Mathematics Education (PRIME) in the College of Natural Science, joint with the Lyman Briggs College (LBC) at Michigan State University (MSU) is seeking a tenure system Assistant Professor with a focus in any of the following areas: mathematics faculty development of race-conscious instructional practices, research-practice partnerships with mathematics departments engaged in equity-oriented reform, and whiteness, cisheteropatriarchy, and their interplay with epistemologies of mathematics. This position is part of our continued commitment to address major and enduring challenges in undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teaching and learning. This is an academic year position with a starting date of August 16, 2024. Salary will be commensurate with rank and qualifications.

Successful applicants will be jointly appointed in the Program in Mathematics Education (PRIME) in the College of Natural Science and the Lyman Briggs College, which will be the tenure home. We seek colleagues whose work demonstrates potential to improve undergraduate experiences and life outcomes of people who have been historically and contemporarily disenfranchised in STEM undergraduate education. This new colleague will join a collaborative and committed group of faculty working on a variety of contemporary issues in these areas, including issues of equity from a range of critical perspectives and methodologies in STEM education.

Major responsibilities The successful candidate will be expected to conduct scholarly research and inquiry; seek and obtain external funding; teach undergraduate- and graduate-level courses; advise doctoral students; and participate in service and outreach activities. There will be opportunities to collaborate with other faculty in ongoing projects, and faculty will be involved in continuing efforts to foster collaborations among the College of Natural Science, the Lyman Briggs College, and other departments and units across campus.

Minimum Requirements
Successful candidates must have earned a PhD in a relevant field prior to the planned start of the position (August 16, 2024) and demonstrate a record of research accomplishments in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or an overlapping and related discipline at the postsecondary level.

Candidates must demonstrate their potential or provide a record of external funding and/or improvements in undergraduate STEM education commensurate with their experience and rank; and must demonstrate ability to contribute to a climate of inclusion, to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups in STEM, and a commitment to excellent, inclusive teaching and service.

Preference will be given to applicants with a research portfolio that focuses on diversity, equity, and inclusion and understanding and challenging the ways systems of privilege and oppression operate in undergraduate STEM education and in STEM fields. Additionally, experience taking a critical and responsive stance toward improving undergraduate experiences and life outcomes of people who have been historically and contemporarily disenfranchised in STEM undergraduate education is desired.
