Associate Teacher for Humanities

Seattle, Washington, United States Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences Full time
Associate Teacher for Humanities

We are considering applications for an Associate teacher who will teach courses in our English and/or History departments. Ideal candidates will have background in a relevant discipline and interest in teaching in both middle and upper school divisions.

What is the Associate Teacher Program at Seattle Academy?

The associate program is a two-year experience designed for those new to the profession to gain experience through targeted professional learning as a cohort. Associates are also teachers of independently taught courses but intentionally staffed with less than a full course load to provide opportunity to learn and apply best teaching practices in a specific discipline.

Associate teachers will be asked to engage in work, including reading, lesson plan and assessment design, observation of master teachers and reflection exercises, to learn more about principles and practices of teaching and learning supported by educational research and reflective of our mission. Associate teachers also participate in all facets of school life: As advisors, trip and retreat leaders, club and activity supervisors, and colleagues within a professional learning community.

We will consider hiring associates for any of our subject areas determined by the staffing priorities for that year. Review the Seattle Academy Faculty Salary Structure for a starting salary range.

OUR MISSION-BASED HIRING PHILOSOPHY College and Life Culture of Performance Inclusive Community Know the Kid SAAS prepares students for College and Life ; we value curiosity and innovation, participation and excellence, and exploration and resolve. Our Culture of Performance fosters the integration of skills and knowledge, the ability to collaborate and take risks, and the capacity to confidently navigate change and ambiguity. We believe that an Inclusive Community embraces cultural agility, civic action, and a broad definition of human potential. Our commitment to Know the Kid establishes the foundation for healthy relationships, and nurtures a mutual respect for each individual's strengths, challenges, and unique story

The mission of Seattle Academy requires that our faculty, students, and staff understand and have contact with a broad array of ideas and insights. One crucial component involves attracting superlative people from diverse backgrounds and traditions who vary by their race and ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, culture, religion, and physical abilities. A second essential element is the creation and maintenance of an atmosphere that welcomes new ideas and encourages an effective and active exchange of views in an environment of mutual respect and candor.

SAAS works to recruit a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff, including underrepresented minorities, particularly women and people of color to its faculty body. We will strive to remove sources of unconscious bias and to recruit and retain community members who are matchless in their compassion for adolescents and their own intellectual and human potential. All candidates seeking employment as a member of the teaching faculty at SAAS should demonstrate the following habits of mind and practice:

  • Candidates should exhibit a " growth mindset "; this is, they should be enterprising, curious, eager to learn, hardworking, and focused on addressing the dilemmas in their teaching/role.
  • Candidates should be compassionate adults who understand boundaries and the difference between students' needs and their own.
  • Candidates should be collegial ; they should seek a healthy balance between autonomy and shared work and should be able to challenge constructively, be challenged, and change as a result.
  • Candidates should be knowledgeable and compelling about the subject/area and should exhibit mastery, intellectual agility, and the ability to explain or engage subject matter in multiple ways.
  • Candidates should exhibit belief in the promise of every student by showing openness and skill in matters of race, class, and identity, and by being empathetic as well as psychologically and pedagogically astute.
