This position is located in the Outpatient Department, Boise VA Medical Center, Boise, Idaho. This position provides support for the Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Twin Falls, Idaho and Caldwell, Idaho, and the VA Outreach clinics in Mountain Home, Idaho, Salmon, Idaho, and the Eastern Oregon clinic in Hines, Oregon.
Duties
Licensed Practical Nurse -
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Accurately completed preventive health and chronic disease indexes of patients seen in outpatient clinics.
- Basic nursing care for adult and elderly patients is administered according to clinic guidelines, and plan of care under the direction of the supervising RN.
- Performs treatments and procedures which include application of antiseptic sterile and non-sterile techniques, i.e., bladder catherization insertion and removal, EKG, enemas, bladder scans, capillary blood glucose (CBG), veni puncture, suture and/or staple removal, and oximetry.
- Recognizes signs and symptoms reflecting changes in patient condition using knowledge of vital signs, CBG, and observational skills. Takes corrective action appropriately when potential or life-threatening changes occur in the patient condition.
- Maintains patient comfort and safety while in the clinical environment.
- Identifies patient educational needs and seeks assistance as appropriate and reassures patients and family members by explaining hospital and outpatient treatments and procedures.
- Effectively communicates with adult and elderly patients and families identifying and responding appropriately to patient's needs such as increased anxiety, procedural knowledge deficits, personal and privacy needs with no more than two valid failures or complaints during the rating period.
- Utilizes patient information systems in the preparation and care of patients in the clinical environment.
- Demonstrates a commitment to providing customer service in all aspects of daily work activities. Demonstration of good customer service includes conveying a positive, courteous, friendly, polite, professional and helpful attitude to customers, making eye contact with individuals when speaking to them, speaking in a friendly voice tone.
- Ensures that daily work is customer-centered, focusing all efforts toward the goal of all customers leaving each interaction feeling they received the best service possible. Employee seeks to present an accurate and constructive image of the medical center. Maintains a courteous, helpful attitude in all working relationships throughout the various outpatient departments.
- Excellence in customer service includes positive written communication, including electronic mail communication.
- Observes, monitors, and reports pertinent data to appropriate interdisciplinary team members.
- Requests medical records and order information from non-VA medical and nursing facilities in order to facilitate patient treatment. Ensures all appropriate paperwork is prepared and placed in medical record and delivered to the appropriate area, this may include printing flags or making a new medical record.
- Completes work in a timely manner and seeks additional assignments when work is completed.
- Takes personal accountability for promptly reporting to duty as scheduled and from breaks in a timely manner to promote patient care and clinic efficiency.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
