The Discovery Analytical Research group within Analytical Enabling Capabilities (Analytical R&D) is seeking applicants for an Associate Principal Scientist position available at its West Point, Pennsylvania research facility. The successful candidate will contribute to the efforts in enabling the discovery of vaccines. Key deliverables will include the development, implementation, and execution of analytical measurement technologies that may accelerate the pace of discovery research and influence molecular design. The successful candidate must be able to collaborate in a dynamic, integrated, and multidisciplinary team environment. A broad range of tools (chromatography, electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, and spectroscopy) are leveraged and new technologies are developed to influence selection of new vaccine candidates and enhance scalability and robustness.

This incumbent should have knowledge in protein chemistry, structural biology, and biochemistry with applications to biomolecules such as viruses, virus like particles, proteins, and DNA/RNA. Strong fundamental knowledge in recent advances in analytical technologies is highly desired. Applicants must have effective organizational skills, multi-tasking, oral / written communications skills, scientific leadership and a desire to conduct research and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Enable discovery partner groups with advanced analytical methods.
  • Represent the discovery analytical research group in project teams.
  • Solve challenging problems by application of one or more analytical technique, including but not limited to, liquid chromatography, ion chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and mass spectrometry.
  • Explore and develop new technologies applicable to the field of measurement science.
  • Demonstrate effective multitasking, prioritization and problem-solving skills in the planning and execution of experiments.
  • The successful candidate must be able to effectively collaborate in a fast-paced, integrated, multidisciplinary team environment.

Education Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Analytical chemistry/biochemistry or related field with a minimum of 4 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, M.S. in analytical chemistry/biochemistry or related field with a minimum of 8 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, or B.S. in analytical chemistry/biochemistry or related field with a minimum of 12 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Strong background and extensive hands-on experience with chromatography and electrophoresis separation techniques (HPLC, UPLC, CE) and hyphenated techniques (LC-MS).
  • Experience with analysis of biological molecules.
  • Demonstrated scientific ability through publications in peer reviewed journals and presentations in scientific conferences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated creativity, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to deliver complex objectives under challenging timelines in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with cross-functional interactions.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience with Immuno-Assays.
  • Experience with protein characterization and protein interactions (Electrophoresis, SPR, ITC, DSC, DLS, MALS)
  • Solid computer skills, experience with automated laboratory instrumentation, and independent analytical problem-solving capabilities.
  • Familiarity with electronic laboratory notebook applications and good documentation practices.
