Job Description
Primary Purpose:
The Senior Manager of Field Safety (SMFS) acts as a direct liaison for senior leadership in the field. Balancing oversight and support, the SMFS focuses on enhancing performance through observation, engaging with employees, and maintaining open communication with headquarters. Additionally, the SMFS proactively intervenes in unsafe situations, collaborates with field teams during regular meetings, and efficiently addresses emerging issues and upcoming projects. Furthermore, the SMFS plays a crucial role in incident management as needed.
Principal Duties:
- Spend time on region observing work being performed, touring facilities, and/or engaging in the field.
- Ensure periodic engagements with all work groups and facilities at your assigned locations / territories / areas.
- Monitor and coach execution and documentation of performance standard engagements (PSE).
- Monitor and coach pre-shift safety meetings to ensure they are conducted at a high standard.
- Deliver effective feedback to craft and management following field engagements, including addressing and following up on any noted performance, process, or material deficiencies.
- Report observed deficient conditions and issues to the work group supervisor/responsible manager and escalate more significant observations where appropriate.
- Observe all types of work performed by field and headquarters teams and contractors, with weighted focus on work performed by the Transportation, Mechanical, Engineering, and Network Operations departments.
- Engage with field teams working on significant engineering projects, line-of-road delays, derailment cleanup, and equipment set out repairs.
- Monitor facility and equipment conditions for organization/cleanliness/readiness to include tooling/spares/consumables.
- Monitor periodic training and qualifications and provide SME support to strengthen the programs whenever opportunity is identified.
- Observe and provide feedback in Local Safety and Service Committee meetings.
- Monitor and participate in event management meetings, including fact-findings, causal analysis and the recommendation of corrective actions.
- Perform assigned audits to validate core business processes are accomplished in accordance with regulations, specifications, and standards.
- Validate deficient safety conditions are appropriately documented and monitor/track for timely correction.
