What You'll Do

Epic Games is looking for a Technical Gameplay Designer to join our team working on LEGO Fortnite. In this role, you'll work with a cross-disciplinary team of game designers, artists, audio designers, and engineers to maintain and evolve our in-game furniture and decoration systems that millions of players use to express themselves. You'll be supported by engineers and design leadership as you implement content and expand & improve the experience.

In this role, you will
  • Own the gameplay implementation of new furniture and decorations, ensuring that they work well within the existing system
  • Design new classes of furniture behavior that inspire player creativity
  • Use Smart Objects, state trees, and blueprints to implement new furniture behavior
  • Drive systemic improvements to our decorative systems focusing on ways to improve quality and velocity
  • Work closely with Art and Animation teams to define proxies for interactive objects
  • Work closely with Gameplay and AI teams to design compelling interactions on new objects
  • Work directly with the Engine team to shape the future of Smart Objects in Unreal Engine; Assess technical debt in the systems you touch, and work with leadership on reducing or managing that debt
What we're looking for
  • 3+ years experience as a game designer working on an item or furniture-related system
  • Experience designing game content for GaaS model
  • Experience working with Blueprint or other scripting languages
  • Strong communication skills: ability to adapt your messaging to your audiences, and create and maintain documentation
  • Deep empathy and understanding of player motivations and forms of play
  • A passion for gaming, with a specific interest and familiarity with Fortnite, LEGO, and decorative crafting systems
  • You're user-focused, passionate, scrappy, solutions-focused, and innovative. These traits equal success at Epic and influence everything we do
  • Bonus: Experience working with AI, behavior trees, smart objects, or state trees
  • Bonus: Experience working on a decorative crafting system
