Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States Pingree School Full time

Pingree School is a dynamic and aspirational, independent, all-gender day school on the North Shore of Boston, located on a beautiful 100-acre campus in South Hamilton, where approximately 385 students in grades 9 through 12 solve problems, build community, and learn how to learn. Pingree School empowers every community member to pursue knowledge with courage and imagination, thrive in joy and challenge, and create a more just and equitable world. Committed to developing global citizens, Pingree actively seeks faculty and students of character and intelligence from diverse social, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Pingree School seeks a full time English Teacher beginning in the academic year. Responsibilities include teaching four sections at various grade-levels, meeting one-on-one with students during free time to workshop papers and offer extra help as needed, contributing to curriculum development, and working as part of a collaborative department.

The discussion-based classroom is at the heart of Pingree's English program. Successful candidates will demonstrate an eagerness to work closely with students to help them develop their own voices and ideas through discussion and writing. The curriculum encompasses both traditional and modern literary works, and it emphasizes critical thinking and reading alongside analytical and creative writing. We seek candidates who convey passion for a diversity of literature and dedication to the writing process, who are comfortable with new classroom technologies as appropriate, who are committed to professional development and sharing best practices with colleagues, and who will build a good rapport with students.

In addition to teaching English, the position includes coaching and/or supervising two seasons of a sport or equivalent afternoon co-curricular activity, as well as serving as an advisor and participating broadly in the life of the school. Consequently, candidates must exhibit both a passion for their subject matter, as well as a commitment to working with adolescents both inside and outside of the classroom.

To apply for the English teacher position, please submit a cover letter and resume, along with contact information for two professional references.

Pingree School is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. Pingree does not discriminate against applicants or employees on the basis of race, sex, pregnancy or pregnancy-related condition, color, religion, national origin, age, ancestry, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity or expression, veteran or active military status, genetics, natural or protective hairstyle, or any other category protected by state, federal or local law.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in the field, a minimum of three years of experience working in a classroom environment, and enjoy working with students on reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. We also seek candidates who are eager to create advanced seminars, particularly in non-western literature.
