Summary/Objective The Head Teacher is responsible for teaching reading, writing, math, science, and social studies to children in a multi-age 3rd and 4th grade classroom. They collaborate extensively with the grade-level cohort, which includes the other 3rd/4th Grade Head Teacher, assistant teachers, Student Support Teacher, School Counselor, and multilevel (co-curricular) teachers for the grade level. The Head Teacher is also responsible for evaluating student progress in these subjects and communicating regularly with parents/guardians, including: weekly updates to the classroom web page, parent-teacher conferences, and emails and phone calls as required to inform families of the child's academic and social-emotional development. Essential Job Functions Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
- Prepare curriculum in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies
- Coordinate and oversee the work of the assistant teacher
- Partner with all adults responsible for students' education and well-being; collaborate with colleagues to plan and execute weekly Flex Days.
- Prepare for, and present at, school events such as open houses, curriculum nights, and informational dinners
- Accompany students on an overnight camping trip once per year
- Plan and lead field trips to local institutions and parks/natural areas
- Communicate regularly with parents, including weekly classroom emails, updates to the classroom web page, and personal emails and phone calls to inform the child's family of academic and social-emotional development
- Write narrative-based progress reports, and lead and participate in parent-teacher conferences
- Supervise lunch and recess daily
- Participate in professional activities designated by the Head of School, which may include workshops, curriculum retreats, meetings, grade reporting, planning, and other professional pursuits
- Attend all pre-announced staff meetings and professional sessions, including staff, level, committee, and evening parent meetings
- Follow the school's policies and procedures for student evaluation and record-keeping, meeting all due dates as required
- Assess the needs of the class and prepare requests for materials, furnishings, and classroom budget; update inventory list and submit to Head of School on last day of school
- Other job duties as assigned
- Track attendance and report to the school office students who are in/out
- Receive and welcome students
- Consult with other teachers for curriculum ideas, sharing materials, and scheduling common activities
- Uphold and reinforce positive behavior by modeling and/or drawing attention to ground rules and community guidelines
- Remain in contact with the whole group and sense changing mood or activity
- Conference with individual children about their work
- Treat children with unconditional positive regard and provide individualized care for needs
- Refresh the environment
- Complete daily notes
- Reflect on individual children and group interaction
- Assemble materials for the following instructional day
- Communicate with Student Support and grade-level teams about any learning or social-emotional issues that surfaced during the day
- Note needed janitorial services and work orders and communicate with the Facilities team, as needed
- Restructure classroom routine, as needed
- Place orders, as needed
- Meet with co-workers, Department Head, and Head of School to share ideas, plan, and problem-solve
- Perform the following selected duties as needed:
- Update long-range class and children's records
- Organize special projects
- Read professional journals or articles
- Confer with the Head of School as requested
- Prepare notes for conferences
- Participate in staff meetings
- Participate in parent education
- Participate in Board meetings, as requested
- Participate in professional meetings outside of school
- Prepare for the school's community activities such as open houses, observations, and all general meetings or special events

Monday-Friday, 7:50 am-3:30 pm Wednesdays, 3:35-4:45 pm (Reserved for Staff Meetings)

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience
- Masters Degree in Education or one of the subject areas taught
- Minimum of three years of teaching experience rooted in progressive education
- Elementary teaching experience
- Experience integrating social justice themes
- Familiarity with Mac OS and Google Suite
- CPR/First Aid certification (preferred)
- Pass a background check
- Have the physical capacity to work with children
- Keep up with professional development – 15 hours per school year
