Summary

The North Battlefield VA Outpatient Clinic (NBVAOPC) is scheduled to open in November of 2024. Those hired for these positions will be required to work at the VA Medical Center or one of the other CBOCs (management determination based on need) until the NBVAOPC opens. This position is aligned with the Suicide Prevention Program.



Duties

The individual plans, develops, implements, and evaluates the facility Suicide Prevention Program to ensure continual quality improvement and excellence in customer service. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for tracking and reporting all suicide attempts and completions at their facility.
  • Exclusively controls the Category I Patient Record Flag as it relates to suicide and limits its use to patients who meet the criteria of being placed on the facility high-risk list.
  • Maintains the list of patients who have a Category I Patient Record Flag for suicide and reviews the list at least every 90 days.
  • Develops partnerships with the facility Post 9/11 Military to VA (M2VA) Coordinators, Patient Safety Managers, Healthcare for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) Coordinators, transitional care management teams, local Vet Center staff, residential care teams, and local mental health teams.
  • Responsible for monitoring VHA performance monitors and measures related to the Suicide Prevention Program to assure they are met throughout the facility and will implement planning to address noted deficiencies.
  • Develops policy and procedures to ensure compliance with Joint Commission, Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and other accrediting bodies and regulatory standards as needed.
  • Develops a data-driven, continuous quality improvement program with established goals and outcomes to evaluate and document the program's effectiveness
  • Oversees the Suicide Prevention Case Managers, including monitoring their caseload and the advocacy services provided to high risk for suicide Veterans in their caseload.
  • Provides follow up on VCL consults received from the VA Suicide Hotline within required timeframes to assure timely access to care and follow-up for patients in crisis. When needed, the SPC assists with and expedites Veteran enrollment into the VA.
  • Ensures efforts to contact is made with Veterans who have been identified as surviving a suicide attempt or who are identified as being high risk. Efforts at personal contact will be made with Veteran and the SPC will establish US mail contact with them to provide an "enhanced care" model of prevention which maintains communication with the Veteran.
  • Provide follow-up on referrals received from staff due to operation S.A.V.E. training.
  • Maintains a facility "high-risk" list which identifies patients who have been deemed at-risk for suicide.
  • Ensures medical center is following all VHA requirements for staff training and education related to Suicide Prevention and Awareness for both clinical and non-clinical staff.
  • Develops and implements a plan for outreach to promote awareness of Veteran suicide risk and educate the community regarding recognizing suicide risk among Veteran population and how to assist Veterans and their families in accessing available resources for support and care.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases when setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
