Job Summary and Qualifications

The Director of Environmental Services is responsible for the planning, organization, development and direction for the overall operation of the Environmental Services Department in accordance with and federal, state, and local standards and guidelines to assure that the highest degree of patient care is maintained at all times.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervises a staff which involves direct and indirect responsibilities for interviewing, selection, training, motivating, wage and salary administration, performance appraisal, developing policies and developing procedures to ensure achievement of goat.
  • Evaluates safe work practices in job performance reviews.
  • Maintains the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc. and the appearance of housekeeping areas, and performs regular inspections of resident areas and rooms for sanitation, order, safety and proper performance of assigned duties.
  • Performs regular inspections of patient, ancillary, and common areas for sanitation, order, safety, and comfortable environment.
  • Assures that housekeeping staff follows established safety regulations in the use of equipment and supplies at all times.
  • Inspects storage rooms, utility and janitorial closet, etc., for upkeep and supply control.
  • Requisitions all housekeeping supplies and equipment and maintains adequate inventory levels to provide a clean, safe and comfortable environment.
  • Recommends budgetary amounts to meet the equipment and supply needs of the unit.
  • Communicates with other unit supervisors to adequately plan for housekeeping services and activities.
  • Coordinates repair needs with Plant Maintenance and Operations.
  • Processes payables efficiently, according to policies and procedures.
  • Prepares and plans the Environmental Services budget and submits to the Management for review and approval.
  • Seeks out new methods and principles, and incorporates them into existing housekeeping practices.
  • Attends and participates in Management Team meetings.
  • Serves on assigned committees of the facility and provides written or verbal reports of the housekeeping services and activities as required by the committees guidelines or direction.
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities for personal growth and development.

Leadership:

  • Provides effective and responsive leadership.
  • Demonstrates qualities of a role model, clearly focused on the goals and objectives of cardiovascular services and the facility.

  • Oversees all management functions related to the service area including budget, payroll, staffing, scheduling and delivery of care, performance evaluations and competencies, and safety plans.

  • Maintains professional education and participates in professional organizations appropriate to the position and services.
  • Excels in proactive use of time and demonstrates exceptional organization skills, including prioritization.
  • Effectively leads and promotes good outcomes in committees responsible for.

Improving Organization Performance and Customer Service

  • Maintains organizational performance goals.

  • Assesses, plans, and develops standards and measurement tools to assess and improve staff and hospital performance in the care of cardiovascular patients and patient safety.
  • Maintains appropriate regulatory compliance. Knowledgeable of legal and ethical obligation of the work and serves as a resource to team members. Identifies and reports instances of impropriety through approved mechanisms. Functions as a role model of personal and professional integrity.
  • Oversees a service safety plan to reduce hazards and risks, prevent accidents and injuries, and maintain safe conditions for staff, patients, and physicians.
  • Assists team in identifying and complying with policies and regulatory standards of appropriate and adequate documentation.
  • Continuously improves service outcomes by overseeing development and follow-through of improvement opportunities that are consistent with the hospital mission, vision, and scope of services and with the HCA corporate vision.
  • Acts as a role model for staff on responsiveness to customer satisfaction issues, routinely meeting and exceeding customer expectations.

  • Utilizes data available in planning and decision making for the service. Monitors volumes, outcomes, customer service, and payer mix.
  • Assesses department staffing needs and communicates needs appropriately. Facilitates appropriate training and educational opportunities for staff for maintenance of competency. Participates in recruitment and retention efforts for staff.
  • Monitors changes in markets served and reacts appropriately, including changes in technology, trends in volumes and treatment options, opportunities for growth. Actively searches for new markets and growth opportunities.
  • Uses available resources and marketing information to develop effective service promotions and marketing plans.
  • Interacts with external suppliers to promote the hospital's ability to maintain and expand market share.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in healthcare/business or equivalent in experience.
  • A minimum of five years related housekeeping experience preferred.
  • Must possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and to supervise professional and non-professional personnel.
  • Good human relation skills, strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively deal with people at different organizational levels both inside and outside the company.
  • Must have well developed problem solving skills and ability to develop conceptual alternatives.
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing housekeeping practices.
