UNC's Department of American Studies has explored the developing cultural entity we call 'America' for more than fifty years.

UNC-Chapel Hill is the largest public university in the state and boasts robust resources to support the study of visual culture, including the Ackland Art Museum as well as the Southern Folklife Collection and the Southern Historical Collection in the UNC Libraries.
Position SummaryThe Department of American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a scholar to teach one course AMST 284 Visual Culture in the spring semester of 2024.
This course investigates how we make and signify meaning through images, ranging from art to advertising to graffiti, and provides the critical tools to understand the visual worlds we inhabit.
Teaching this course will involve delivering twice-weekly lectures to approximately 100 undergraduate students, designing all course assignments and rubrics for assessing them, and supervising and mentoring two graduate teaching assistants who will lead weekly discussion sections and assist with advising and grading.
The anticipated start date for this position is January 1, 2024.Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Candidates must have a PhD in American Studies.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Must have expertise in the critical interpretation of multiple visual media in historical and cultural contexts.
