A Brief Overview
The Physical Therapist IV, Clinical Specialist is a senior therapist who is fully competent with PT I, II and III job duties and has a broad clinical skill set across a variety of patient types, ages and diagnoses utilizing and applying innovative and advanced skills and techniques to solve patient care needs in an accurate and efficient manner. The Physical Therapist IV functions independently and serves as a content expert in particular population(s)/service line(s). May be granted administrative time to develop new and modified pathways, processes and interventions in their particular focus area(s), including researching any new/proposed initiatives, understanding the impact on rehab practices, and ensuring rehab staff are aware of, educated on, and aligned with any new process. The PT IV uses electronic and face to face communication including Clinical Alerts, classroom education sessions, and/or arranging for internal/external content experts to provide education to rehab staff to ensure knowledge is obtained by front line staff.

What you will do

  • Must meet and be proficient in performing all of the essential functions of Physical Therapy I, II, and III with a more diverse and highly complex patient population as well as the following:
  • Leads patient care conferences, communicating with and teaching other care providers.
  • Leads team or discipline meetings.
  • Makes recommendations for the development of departmental policies and procedures; leads new program development, for example by developing treatment protocols for new patient populations.
  • Must develop content for clinical teaching, including the clinical instruction of interns/students, residents, and other staff.
  • Must develop/present at least 3 professional development activities from the following choices: CEU-eligible in-service, course, state or national poster or presentation, and/or lecture at university level program.
  • Assists in re-evaluating care delivery/programs and completes assignments in the departmental plan to improve services.
  • Participates in research or new program development, for example by developing treatment protocols for new patient populations.
  • Is aligned with and fully supports departmental and organizational principles, goals, and objectives.
  • Regular participation as faculty/mentor/preceptor in Advanced Training Programs.
  • Serves as a primary orientation resource as needed.
  • Maintains content expertise in focus area, interfacing with unit/service line staff and leadership to keep abreast of policy, practice, protocol, - and/or equipment changes.
  • Assesses the needs of service line/patient population, then assesses the educational needs of the staff and serves as a resource in meeting those needs.
Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (required)
  • Graduation from an approved Physical Therapy curriculum (required)
  • Masters' or Doctorate degree (preferred)
Experience Qualifications
  • Must meet all criteria:
  • At least four (4) years clinical practice as Physical Therapist within SHC System or > 10 years' experience outside SHC
  • Minimum of one advanced certification
  • Has lead Department or Interdisciplinary Program/Initiative or Process Improvement Project
  • Successfully completes a Stanford Leadership Development course within the first 12 months
    of hire/promotion into this classification.
  • Completes at least 50% of required annual continuing education hours in area of specialty

  • Possesses and maintains substantial content expertise in the service/unit/population for his/her specialty
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge and adherence to Code of Ethics and performance standards specific to the clinician's professional organization
  • Knowledge of available equipment and vendors used in assigned area
  • Knowledge of basic business aspects of position, such as utilization management, charging practices and regulatory practice compliance;
  • Knowledge of evaluation and treatment methodologies as applied to routine patient care
  • Knowledge of legal issues affecting the clinical practice
  • Knowledge of pathologies and injuries which result in physical impairments
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, equipmentequipment, and theory of the practice of clinical specialty
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, clearly, conciselyconcisely, and effectively with patients, families, co-workers, visitors, supervisorssupervisors, and other health professionals

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

Physical Demands
  • Frequent Bending. The work involves considerable exertion such as frequent lifting of patients and equipment, bending and stooping, and walking.
Blood Borne Pathogens
  • Category II - Tasks that involve NO exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues, but employment may require performing unplanned Category I tasks

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $ $80.65 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
