DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a regional, integrated laboratory system providing services to the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. DMC University Laboratories evolved in 1993 and is comprised of Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, two rapid response hospital laboratories, Centralized Stat Lab, Centralized Blood Bank Lab, and full service outreach infrastructure which includes patient service centers, remote ambulatory laboratories, marketing staff, courier system and billing department. The DMC University Laboratories service area covers the entire Southeast Michigan market, and is growing at a rapid pace with the following outstanding features: Test menu of over 1,000 tests, which includes high end specialty tests. Less than 1% of our tests are sent to outside reference laboratories. Provide reference laboratory services to many of the other healthcare systems in Southeastern Michigan and several out of state facilities.
Summary Description
Under limited supervision, guides the daily activities of the processing group within the Specimen Processing area of the Core Laboratory ensuring efficient and uninterrupted operations. Position also has responsibility for send-out area . Adjusts staffing assignments within the processing area in order to maintain workflow efficiency and turnaround expectations . Serves as a technical resource person providing guidance, on-going education and training to staff. As directed , provides input into procedures /protocol development . Ensures compliance and provides interpretation of procedural intent as requested /required. As requested provides input into staff performance which includes performance reviews and disciplinary actions . Monitors workflow and staff to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures . As requested , generates designated statistical reports to monitor the section. May act as Supervisor in absence of one . Assists in specialized projects as assigned .
Principle duties and responsibilities include :
- 1. Serve as technical resource person in matters related to Specimen Triage area
- 2 Acts as liaison with inter-departmental personnel to resolve daily related workflow
problems to maintain effective public relations
- 3. Assists in evaluation , development and implementation of new techniques providing feedback
and changes to the Supervisor .
- 4. Assists in monitoring of client compliance to laboratory standards in matters related to specimen
collection and specimen handling. Documents issues and forward to Shift Supervisor .
- 5. Assists in the monitoring of time sensitive and special handling specimens to ensure specimen
integrity is maintained . Ensures that these specimens get to appropriate technical areas within
pre-determined guidelines .
- 6. Reviews work performance and productivity of staff in conjunction with Supervisor
- 7. In conjunction with Supervisor ensures that equipment are in proper working order,
maintains adequate inventory of supplies .
- 8. Performs designated tasks in the send-out area
- 9. Performs other duties as assigned .
Qualifications :
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related sciences or clinical discipline or Canadian Degree in clinical discipline and completion of an accredited Technologist program.
2. Registered by ASCP , Canadian CSMLS , National Certifying Agency or AMT.
3. Knowledge of laboratory computer systems , processing equipment and laboratory testing .
