Upper School Counselor

SUMMARY
The Upper School counselor is an integral member of the support team for Hathaway Brown's students. The Upper School counselor will work cooperatively with the Director of the Upper School, the Dean of Students, and the Upper School Learning Specialist to coordinate the school's counseling needs. The counselor will help Hathaway Brown be responsive to current research on adolescent development and will have a deep understanding of the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the students in our school community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide guidance and support for students, faculty, and families in the Upper School Community.
- Meet in one-on-one counseling sessions with students to address personal, academic, and social-emotional concerns. Provide a safe and confidential space for students to express themselves and explore solutions to their problems.
- Facilitate group counseling sessions on topics such as stress management, conflict resolution, self-esteem building, and peer relationships. Create a supportive environment where students can share their experiences and learn from one another.
- Serve on the Student Support Team; collaborate with the Division Director, Dean of Students, Learning Specialist, and Grade Deans to identify students in need of academic, social, and emotional support.
- Communicate with parents/guardians and outside clinicians to support students at HB. Provide families with local resources for counseling, educational testing, and academic support.
- Respond promptly to crises or emergencies involving students, such as emotional crises, bullying incidents, or mental health concerns. Implement appropriate interventions and refer students to outside resources when necessary.
- Collaborate with the Director of Counseling and other members of the HB counseling/wellness team.
- Teach Wellness courses to 9th, 11th, and/or 12th grade students as needed each year.
- Promote diversity goals and initiatives in line with the school's Strategic Plan for Diversity.
- Be visibly present throughout the school day and maintain a welcoming and open office environment.
- Ensure compliance with legal requirements of government regulations and agencies; maintain the educational standards established by the state and by those agencies that examine and accredit the school.
- Master's degree (M.A.) or equivalent; at least five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience; counseling background.
- Certification as a school counselor, social worker, and/or Psychologist preferred.
- Demonstrate significant school counseling experience as well as an understanding of the history and culture of Hathaway Brown.
- Ability to recognize and express the long-term benefits of an all-girls education and the distinctive value of Hathaway Brown School.
- Demonstrate a passion and understanding for girls' social and emotional development and serve as a role model for young women.
- Genuine sense of humor and infectious optimism, integrity, and a love of teaching and learning.
- Collaborative point of view; able to warmly and enthusiastically partner with students, faculty, and parents.
- A deep understanding of best practices and innovations in the field of education in general and in girls' schools in particular.
