Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States University of Michigan - Ann Arbor Full time

A cover letter is required for consideration for this position and should be attached as the first page of your CV. The cover letter should address your specific interest in the position and outline skills and experience that directly relate to this position including your experience with firearm injury prevention research. A one-page Research Statement should also be included outlining your past firearm research or research within a related field (e.g., suicide prevention, violence prevention) and where you see your work going in the next 3-5 years. Applicants should also include 3 relevant publications.

The Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention is a transdisciplinary institute that works to engage the breadth of expertise across the University of Michigan, with input from nonacademic stakeholders, to generate knowledge and advance solutions that will decrease firearm injury in the United States. The Institute fosters research that will be mindful of the critical social and historical context of firearms in the U.S., and is inclusive and encourages diverse viewpoints, disciplinary perspectives, and approaches. It serves as a national hub for research that drives new solutions to this public health crisis, and trains the next generation of leaders in the field. The Institute is supported by an organizational structure that provides internal oversight and external guidance, and focuses activities across five cores: 1) research and scholarship, 2) education and training, 3) community engagement, 4) policy, 5) implementation, and 5) data and methods.

The Institute is seeking a highly motivated individual who will work with other researchers and stakeholders within and outside of the University. Research Track Faculty positions are intended for persons for whom a full-time career in firearm injury prevention research is expected. Candidates must show potential for scholarly development, a record of peer-reviewed publications including some on firearm research or within related areas (e.g., violence prevention, suicide prevention), and participation in relevant academic or professional meetings.

This position is a full-time Ph.D., non-tenure track research faculty position with a background in social and behavioral science or related fields and advanced statistical analysis skills to expand our evaluation team at the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention. The position will start with 100% funded effort on a multi-year project while working closely with the project Principal Investigator and the research team. The candidate will join a team to provide technical assistance for the evaluation of the community violence intervention programs in Michigan, specifically with expertise in survey development, data analysis, and program evaluation. The key responsibility of the candidate on the multi-year project includes: 1) To assess the change of violence / firearm-related outcomes over time using advanced analytic approaches; 2) To identify appropriate psycho-behavioral measures to evaluate program effectiveness for each project, and 3) To support evaluation design and establish survey methods for each project. As part of the faculty at the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention, the candidate may also contribute to the development of evaluation methodology and analytic approaches for firearm injury and violence prevention across different projects.

The candidate is also expected to procure additional federal, state, or foundational funding through collaborations with faculty members at the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention and across the University of Michigan. Specifically, the candidate will be expected to work with other Institute faculty to lead or support firearm injury prevention research and apply for their own funding with the assistance of the Institute. The successful candidate will be expected to be proficient at scientific writing, data analysis, data management, project management, and be able to prepare research papers and grant applications as well as present results. The successful candidate will be expected to mentor postdocs and students within the Institute. Classroom teaching is not part of the job responsibilities.

This position requires a PhD with graduate-level training in public health, social and behavioral science, or a related field. The candidate should be able to carry out research tasks independently, yet collaborate effectively with other clinical and research investigators. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Strong methodological skills are necessary and while we are open to a quantitative or qualitative emphasis of the candidate's preferred methods we expect the successful candidate to have some proficiency with both approaches.

Advanced statistical analysis skills such as time series analysis, structural equation models, mixed models. Advanced experience in survey methodology working with community partners. Three to five years of experience with evaluation of community-based programs, process, and outcome evaluation. Experience working with diverse federal funding agencies (i.e., NIH, DOJ, CDC). Interest in team science. Completed two or more years of postdoctoral work (as a fellow or early career faculty position), and experience with working with graduate students or postdoctoral scholars.

The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks. Background checks are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

This posting will remain open until the position is filled, and for a minimum of seven calendar days. The review and selection process may begin as early as the eighth day after posting. This opening may be removed from posting boards and filled anytime after the minimum posting period has ended.

The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
