The Structural Engineer will design structures related to local, state, and federal transportation and highway projects. Primary duties will include structural design, analysis, planning and review. This position will be based in the Thornton, CO office.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct design of various structure types for transportation-related or civil projects, including bridges, retaining walls, and other structures.
  • Determine structure type and dimensions and conduct preliminary design calculations during preliminary design phase.
  • Determine appropriate design and analysis approach in consultation with Structural Engineer Manager.
  • Perform structural analysis and prepare design calculations.
  • Using guidance from applicable design code (AASHTO LFRD Bridge Design Code or IBC Code), apply appropriate loads to structural members and design members to satisfy strength limit states and service limit states.
  • Develop sketches and coordinate plan development with CAD technicians.
  • Consult regularly with Structural Engineer Manager.
  • Development of accurate, complete structural details, construction plans and reports in accordance with engineering best practices utilizing a variety of industry standard software programs.
  • Prepare project deliverables within designated timelines. Preparation of associated calculations, reports, and spreadsheets.
  • Prepare structural layouts, construction specifications, and construction cost estimates.
  • Adhere to the requirements of the internal Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Work collaboratively with team and to develop detailed design documents for construction plans.
  • Regular communication with Project Managers on key issues and project progress.
  • Develop, establish, and maintain positive working relationships with our employees, clients, and other business partners.
  • Attend design review meetings and interact positively with clients and construction personnel.
  • Ability to travel to meeting and job sites is required.
  • May mentor less experienced engineers
  • May lead projects and/or provide project management support.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.S. in Structural Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license (Colorado strongly preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years of continuous and progressive experience in structural design and analysis, primarily with bridges and transportation structures
  • Working knowledge of structural analysis/design software and finite element software
  • Proficiency in use of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, InRoads and/or Microstation software
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including strong skills in Excel
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and written communications skills
  • Ability to cooperate and work effectively in a team environment
  • Flexibility and demonstrated ability to work effectively on multiple concurrent projects; ability to prioritize and meet established timelines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiar with Colorado Dept. of Transportation (CDOT) project development and local agency process.
  • Proficiency in using Microstation InRoads and/or Microstation OpenRoads software.

 

Work Environment:

  • Office environment, sitting at computer workstation for extended periods. Overtime may be required periodically.
