Deputy Director of Fundraising

Our client is a DC-based non-profit organization providing advocacy and services to protect our aquatic habitats from today’s environmental challenges. With over 50 years of conservation experience, our client is currently experiencing major growth. They are seeking a like-minded candidate with strong fundraising experience to join their team as a Deputy Director of Fundraising.
ABOUT THE POSITION
This will be a key leadership position with the primary task of mobilizing people and resources to advance our client’s vision. This role will require a candidate with a Strategic Mind and strong Management Skills to lead Fundraising programs targeting mid-level ($1K+), major ($50K+), and principal-level ($1M+) donors in addition to targeted planned giving donors.
Primary duties will include management of donor and prospect qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies. They will ensure alignment across the Individual Giving team and larger Development departments. This role will work closely with other key leadership team members to drive significant fundraising growth from individual donor support.

Location: Washington, DC – Hybrid (1 day on-site, 4 days remote per week).
Compensation: $95K+, negotiable based on experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy and Operations:
- Work with the Director of Individual Philanthropy, to design and execute fundraising strategies to secure the annual program fundraising goal ($10M – $12M+) to improve conservation impact.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Individual Giving team, including portfolio and prospect moves management systems, overseeing the stewardship, cultivation, and solicitation strategies for individual giving and planned giving donors and prospects. Create, manage, and support systems to ensure team members stay on target with deadlines and goals.
- Support management of Director, CDO, and CEO donor portfolios, ensuring annual goals and objectives are met.
- Develop high-level briefings for senior development staff (Director, CDO, CEO) in advance of meetings with major and principal gift-level donors and prospects.
- Manage key operational budgeting components of the Individual Giving program, including the production of annual budget and quarterly reprojections reports and development of revenue/expense budget goals.
- Track and manage restricted and unrestricted gift reporting requirements, designate and track use in alignment with donor intent, and manage tracking in the database. Liaise with Finance and Program Department colleagues.
- Supervise acknowledgment process for all mid-level, major, and principal gift-level donors including assigning and tracking actions across the team.
- Maintain database integrity and produce lists and queries to support the needs of the individual giving team.
- Exhibit respect for and excellent service to donors and all supporters through prompt and courteous communication.
- Manage key consultant relationships and contracted projects and assist with additional projects as needed.
Communications:
- Manage a calendar and portfolio of writing responsibilities, project managing the creation of compelling and tailored major/principal donor proposals and reports, regular program updates, and providing writing and copy-editing support.
- Manage appropriate responses to major/principal donor inquiries that come in through a variety of channels, including direct mail, email, and phone. Coordinate responses with senior development leadership (Director, CDO, CEO).
- Support the production of individual giving materials and communications, including direct mail, emails, proposals, reports, and cultivation materials.
Management:
- Manage up to two staff on the Individual Philanthropy Team. Lead hiring, onboarding, professional development, and evaluation efforts for team members, in collaboration with Director(s).
- Work with the IPG Coordinator to refine, update, and document operational efforts for the IG and PG Teams.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Philanthropic Management, Business Management, or related fields.
- 5+ years of Non-Profit Fundraising Management experience generating $10M+ in annual fundraising goals.
- 2+ years of Direct Reports Management experience, including mentorship and team development experience.
- Demonstrated experience in Budget Management.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage and execute multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to work with individuals of all types and backgrounds.
- Mission-driven mindset with a strong passion for aquatic conservation.
- Highly Preferred: Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge donor management system.
