Role: CAE Occupant Safety Engineer

Location: Detroit, Michigan

Responsible for developing and optimizing occupant safety systems for Frontal and side modes. This role requires advanced simulation skills to determine occupant kinematics, analyze restraint systems, and ensure occupant protection meets legal and safety standards across a complete program cycle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze occupant kinematics by applying first principles and developing 1D models (spring-mass systems) to understand energy modes and residual energy impacts on occupant safety.
  • Design and validate restraint systems, including airbags, seatbelts, and occupant sensors, ensuring they perform effectively across various crash scenarios.
  • Conduct component and system-level testing and validation of restraint components, correlating with simulations for precise calibration.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to develop and optimize occupant safety systems in line with program requirements.
  • Interpret simulation and test data, balancing occupant injury metrics and adhering to legal and NCAP limits.
  • Provide solutions for conflicting requirements, optimizing occupant protection within the framework of injury metrics and legal standards.
  • Ensure program compliance with global safety regulations and standards, such as FMVSS, ECE, and NCAP, in all restraint system designs.
  • Perform occupant injury analysis, correlating test data from sled and vehicle level tests with system simulations.
  • Document simulation processes, findings, and recommendations, providing comprehensive reports for occupant safety design adjustments.

Additional Requirements:

  • Experience with CAE tools for occupant safety, such as MADYMO and LS-DYNA.
  • In-depth knowledge of occupant injury metrics, legal limits, and NCAP requirements.
  • Strong collaboration skills for working with suppliers and cross-functional teams on restraint system development.
  • Extensive experience in program development and validation of restraint systems for occupant safety.
