Crown Point Press, founded in 1962, focuses on the art of etching. We invite artists from all over the world to make etchings in our studio, which we then exhibit and sell in our gallery. Our gallery, bookstore and studio are located in a historic building across the street from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Description of the Position:
This position is full-time, working Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm. Occasional overtime will be required during art fairs and special events. This position is in-person.
The gallery associate will work closely under the executive director to develop and expand the sales program, make sales in the gallery, generate new sales leads outside the gallery, travel to art fairs, and provide general administrative support.
The gallery associate will become familiar with the etching process, the inventory, and the artists, as well as our long history, with the goal of sharing and discussing it with the general public. To promote Crown Point, the duties involve greeting clients and visitors to the gallery, speaking about the press and its activities, giving tours of the current exhibition and the studio, posting on social media, and working at art fairs.
In addition to assisting with our current clients, the gallery associate will develop new client leads. We are looking for a person who is self-motivated with the ability to make new client connections, and who can follow through on sales leads.
The gallery associate will assist the executive director with installing shows in the gallery (including wall prep, lifting and hanging framed prints), generating checklists and wall labels, as well as maintaining the artist files and keeping the showrooms in order.
Excellent writing skills are required for writing press releases, web text, email blasts and artist biographical summaries.
We expect the gallery associate to take on more responsibility as their knowledge and abilities increase, such as curating shows in the gallery, developing social events for the press, creating marketing strategies, and being a more visible representative of the press. This is a job with room for growth
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate has a genuine interest in printmaking and contemporary art; has a BA degree or higher (preferably with an emphasis on art history or contemporary art) or equivalent; is self-motivated; has three or more years of experience interacting with clients and making sales; has excellent written and verbal communication skills; is highly-organized; can work independently and as an effective team member. The ideal candidate is proficient in Microsoft Word, Instagram and Facebook. Knowledge of Artsystems, Indesign and/or Photoshop is a plus.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this position, the candidate will regularly be required to use their hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate tools/controls, and to reach with hands and arms. The candidate will frequently be required to stand, talk, hear, and lift. It may be necessary to climb a ladder and lift up to 40 lbs. Candidate must be able to handle tools for installation.
