Position Overview: The School Behavior Specialist is responsible for supporting students with behavioral challenges by developing and implementing effective behavior intervention strategies. This role involves collaborating with teachers, parents, and other school staff to create a positive and conducive learning environment. The specialist will work to improve student behavior, enhance academic performance, and promote social-emotional development.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Behavioral Assessment: Conduct functional behavior assessments (FBAs) to identify the causes and functions of student behavior. Use assessment data to develop targeted intervention plans.
  • Intervention Development: Design and implement evidence-based behavior intervention plans (BIPs) tailored to individual student needs. Monitor and adjust plans as necessary.
  • Direct Support: Provide direct support to students through individual or group sessions. Teach and reinforce positive behaviors, social skills, and coping strategies.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with teachers, school counselors, administrators, and other staff to integrate behavior support strategies into the classroom and school-wide practices.
  • IEP Participation: Serve as a member of Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams. Contribute to the development of IEP goals related to behavior and social-emotional development.
  • Professional Development: Offer training and coaching to teachers and staff on behavior management techniques, positive reinforcement, and de-escalation strategies.
  • Family Engagement: Communicate with parents and guardians to provide updates on student progress and collaborate on strategies for behavior support at home.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Collect and analyze data on student behavior and intervention effectiveness. Use this data to inform decision-making and report on progress.
  • Crisis Intervention: Provide immediate support and intervention during behavioral crises. Develop and implement crisis intervention plans as needed.
  • Compliance: Ensure all behavior intervention practices comply with school district policies, state regulations, and federal laws related to special education and student services.


Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in psychology, special education, applied behavior analysis, or a related field.
  • Certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience working with children and adolescents in an educational setting.
  • Strong knowledge of behavior assessment and intervention strategies.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of special education laws and regulations (IDEA, IEP process).


Work Environment: The School Behavior Specialist will work primarily within school settings across the Colorado school district, including elementary, middle, and high schools. This role may require travel between schools and flexibility to address diverse student needs and environments.
