Nature of Work

The Epidemiologist ensures the data collection and analysis of state-mandated infant and maternal mortality reviews for the Fatality and Mortality Review Team (FMRT).

This position:

• Provides direction and leadership for maternal and infant mortality data collection, surveillance and evaluation components of the Infant and Maternal Mortality Review Panel (IMMRP) Program.
• Develops and maintains the IMMRP surveillance system and encompasses multiple data sources including, but not limited to the Fetal & Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) and Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA) data systems.
• Conducts epidemiological queries and analyses leveraging the full functionality of the Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) and the Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA) data systems and other data systems to identify burden and evaluate programs within the state addressing maternal and infant deaths in West Virginia.
• Develops processes and tools for evaluating program.
• Provides guidance and support to the nurse abstractors for data quality issue identification and suggest appropriate procedures for correcting issues.
• Works with the Health Statistic Center to develop data quality initiatives to improve IMMRP data and vital statistics data.
• Prepares and submits required legislative reports.
• Prepares, presents, and responds to data produced for other areas of OMCFH and BPH.
• Provides technical consultation, policy interpretation and administrative support necessary to ensure adherence to governing authorities.
• Devises proactive solutions to problems utilizing an assortment of methods, including the examination of review processes.
• Makes timely, informed decisions that consider facts, goal, constraints, and risks.
• Defines goals and priorities and facilitates action plans to achieve timely deliverables.

Performs other duties as assigned by the OMCFH DEEPS Division Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: A Doctorate degree from a regionally accredited college or university in epidemiology, public health, veterinary medicine, preventive medicine, medicine, biological, physical, behavioral or environmental sciences including at least two courses in epidemiology covering additional epidemiology principles, methods and design concepts, or at least two courses in statistical design methods courses for the behavioral sciences, or at least two publications in two different peer-reviewed journals, and at least one course in biostatistics or other research-oriented statistics course.

OR

A Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in epidemiology, public health, biology, nursing, physical, behavioral, natural, or veterinary sciences, preventive medicine, or medicine including two courses in epidemiology and one course in biostatistics OR certification in infection control (CIC); AND three years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in epidemiology.

Substitution: Completion of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Epidemic Intelligence Service or public health prevention specialist training can substitute for the required training.

OR

Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in biology, nursing, physical, behavioral, or natural sciences, AND five years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in conducting epidemiology, including disease investigation, risk assessment or environmental epidemiology may substitute for the required training.

OR

Three years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in performing Epidemiologist 1 responsibilities, including disease investigation, risk assessment, or environmental epidemiology may substitute for the required training.

For Arboviral Entomologist Training: Masters Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in entomology or biology.

Experience: Three years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in entomology.
