The Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI) is a U.S. policy institute and public outreach organization dedicated to helping Americans understand the breadth and importance of the relationship with the Republic of Korea. Through our publications, programs, and public events, KEI seeks to advance understanding of Korea in ways that will inform policy makers and the American public of the economic and political implications of our connections to the Korean Peninsula.

KEI is seeking an expert with program management skills and deep knowledge of the Korean Peninsula and U.S. foreign policy towards the region as well as experience with political methodology in connection with geopolitics and international relations. Reporting to the President & CEO and working with the team, the Director of Public Opinion and External Affairs sets KEI’s programmatic agenda and develops strategy that focuses on KEI’s unique positioning for policy impact in various areas of focus while establishing and scaling KEI’s strategic institutional partnerships.

In addition to a demonstrated record of program execution and publications as an expert on relevant policy issues, a successful candidate should possess exceptional communications and interpersonal skills, as well as political judgement, to establish and sustain relationships with external stakeholders and partners.

This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C. with the possibility of two days per week of remote work, subject to program and office requirements. The position requires domestic and international travel. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. KEI does not sponsor an employment visa.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Program Strategy and Management

  • Working with senior management and staff, develop and implement a programmatic agenda in line with KEI’s mission and priority with a focus on collaborative programs with partner organizations.
  • Create and execute programs in response to pressing policy problems through engagement with partner institutions, executive and legislative branches, and journalists.
  • Design topics for discussion, recruit speakers and participants, and coordinate logistics for collaborative events including conferences, meetings, briefings, and private roundtables.
  • Cultivate and expand the pool of institutions and experts in the U.S. and Korea who partner with KEI to increase the impact of KEI’s work and to convene new voices and perspectives.
  • Plan and manage KEI’s polling programs often through collaboration with partner institutions. Collect, analyze, and summarize relevant qualitative and quantitative research and historical data. Draft and deploy written materials, public opinion research, data analysis, digital content, and presentations. Organize public events to elevate KEI’s analyses and expand their reach.
  • Perform representational duties for the organization as needed in the absence of and as requested by the President and CEO.
  • Perform other program-related duties as required.

Research

  • Serve as subject matter expert on issues related to the Korean Peninsula and the U.S.-ROK relations with a focus on polling and policy development.
  • Author policy reports, research papers, op-eds, analyses, and presentations on a regular basis.
  • Present own research in conferences and seminars and participates in KEI and outside events.
  • Assist with publication and communications processes by reviewing and editing written content, including blog posts, newsletters, press releases, issue briefs on relevant policy matters.

External Engagement

  • Working closely with the Communications team, communicate with external stakeholders and advance KEI’s collective work product through op-eds, briefings, and media engagements.
  • Represent KEI at discussions and conferences to ensure that KEI’s activities are effectively represented externally.
  • Establish and expand working relationships with US and Korean government officials, Congress, peers at other Washington-based policy institutes, journalists, Korean businesses and organizations in Washington, and others.


Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related discipline plus equivalent experience; International Relations, Political Science, Public Policy, Political Economy or a field related to the candidate’s area of subject matter.
  • At least 10 years of policy or academic work experience required.
  • Proven ability to produce policy-relevant research in the relevant field while meeting rapid, multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Strong editorial judgment, writing and editing ability. Attention to detail for fact-checking, proofing, and other quality control.
  • A sophisticated understanding of the mechanics of elections and public opinion research.
  • Experience handling primary data and producing analyses using statistical programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead programmatic efforts.
  • Experience in the legislative branch preferred.
  • Proven ability to build and manage relationships with high-profile audiences.
  • Working proficiency in Korean required.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
