This position typically involves strategic planning, leadership, and a deep understanding of both IT and manufacturing operations. Here’s an overview of the responsibilities, skills, and experience required for the role:
Key Responsibilities:
IT Strategy and Planning:
- Develop and implement the IT strategy in line with the company’s goals.
- Create an IT Roadmap to execute and align our siloed IT systems with our company’s goals.
- Oversee IT projects related to manufacturing systems (e.g., ERP, MES, SCADA).

- Implement IoT (Internet of Things) and smart factory technologies to improve production processes and data collection.
Software Integration:
- Ensuring interoperability: One of their core responsibilities is ensuring that disparate software systems (whether legacy or new) are integrated efficiently. This might involve:
- Developing strategies to connect siloed systems.
- Overseeing the implementation of APIs, middleware, or integration platforms that enable smooth communication between different systems.
- Managing the selection and implementation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, customer relationship management (CRM) tools, or other enterprise applications.

Permission Protocols & Security:
- Establishing access controls: A Director of IT is responsible for developing and managing permission protocols across the organization. This ensures that only authorized users have access to specific data and systems.
- Role-based access control (RBAC): Implementing permission levels (e.g., admin, user, guest) is crucial. The Director will likely oversee how user roles are defined and ensure that users can only access information and tools relevant to their job.
- Security protocols: Ensuring robust security measures are in place, including multi-factor authentication (MFA), encryption, and compliance with regulatory requirements (such as GDPR, HIPAA).
- Monitoring and auditing: They would also implement and maintain systems to track and audit user access to ensure that security and compliance standards are met.
Cybersecurity and Data Protection:
- Protect sensitive manufacturing data, intellectual property, and customer information.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, data privacy regulations, and cybersecurity best practices.
Team Leadership and Collaboration:
- Lead a team of IT professionals (network engineers, systems administrators, etc.).
- Foster collaboration between IT and other departments, such as production, logistics, and quality control, to improve operational efficiency.
Budgeting and Cost Control:
- Develop and manage the IT budget, ensuring that technology investments deliver ROI.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction through technology innovation (e.g., automation, cloud solutions).
Vendor Management:
- Manage relationships with IT vendors, service providers, and contractors to ensure reliable service delivery.
- Negotiate contracts and manage procurement of IT-related equipment and software.
Support for Manufacturing Operations:
- Troubleshoot and resolve IT issues that directly affect production (e.g., system outages, hardware failures).
- Ensure continuous support for critical manufacturing operations, including uptime and performance monitoring.
