Director of IT Operations

The Company
Ingles Markets began in 1963 as a single supermarket and has since grown into a regional grocery store chain with just under 200 retail locations operating in 6 southeastern states, a 1.6-million-square foot distribution center, two truck fleets, and a milk processing plant. Ingles Markets’ headquarters and distribution center are located just 15 minutes outside of Asheville, NC in the town of Black Mountain.
The Team
We are a lean team that services 27,000 employees across 6 states. We work hard as a collective team to ensure everything is accomplished, even if it is not in our job description. The Position
The Director of IT Operations is responsible for planning, developing, and directing all operational activities of the IT Operations department, as well as providing direction and support for IT solutions that enhance critical business operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with key leadership to formulate and deploy long-term strategic plans for acquiring and enabling efficient and cost-effective information processing and communication technologies.
- Manage IT department operational and strategic planning, including business requirements, project planning, and organizing and negotiating the allocation of resources.
- Guide business and IT leaders in making investment decisions that balance and prioritize current operational demands, disruptions, and opportunities with the longer-term strategic vision of the organization.
- Provide technology guidance, road maps, principles, standards, and best practices.
- Where necessary, re-engineer infrastructure support to ensure it aligns with business processes, tactical planning, and strategic vision.
- Define and communicate project milestones, service level agreements, and resource allocation to executive team, department leads, support staff, and end users.
- Develop and review budgets for and from IT department divisions and ensure they comply with stated goals, guidelines, and objectives.
- Review performance of IT systems to determine operating costs, productivity levels, and upgrade requirements.
- Benchmark, analyze, report on, and make recommendations for the improvement of the IT infrastructure and IT systems.
- Develop bid requirements for all hardware and software upgrades, review submitted bids for compliance with stated requirements, and make the appropriate award.
- Authorize and oversee the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, development, and support of all hardware and software, based on department needs.
- Develop business case justifications and cost/benefit analyses for IT spending and initiatives.
- Direct research on potential technology solutions and implementations in support of new initiatives, opportunities, and procurement efforts.
- Oversee provision of end-user services, including helpdesk and technical support services.
- Develop and implement all IT policies and procedures, including those for architecture, security, disaster recovery, standards, purchasing, and service provision.
- Oversee negotiation and administration of vendors, outsourcer, and consultant contracts and service agreements.
- Manage IT staffing, including recruitment, supervision, scheduling, development, evaluation, and disciplinary actions.
- Establish and maintain regular written and in-person communications with the organization’s senior leaders, department heads, and end users regarding pertinent IT activities.
- Additional responsibilities as deemed necessary.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience.
- 7+ years’ of experience managing and/or directing an IT operation.
- Proven experience in IT infrastructure strategic planning and development, project management, and/or policy development.
- Good understanding and technical knowledge of current network and client operating systems, hardware, protocols, and standards.
- Experience with systems design and development from business requirements analysis through to day-to-day management.
- Demonstrated experience in developing business processes, managing staff, budgeting, and/or overseeing business office operations.
- Demonstrated ability to apply IT in solving business problems.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse array of vendors.
- In-depth knowledge of applicable laws and regulations as they relate to IT.
- Ability to present ideas in a business-friendly and user-friendly language.
- Highly self-motivated, self-directed, and attentive to detail.
- Extensive experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
