The design process requires application of industry standards and codes to design and specify electrical systems meeting project requirements. The Controls Engineers work closely with Mechanical Engineers to create solutions that harmonize with the rest of the scope of the project.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Troubleshooting

  • Able to measure and apply fundamentals of electricity to determine wiring or component issues and recommend fixes.
  • Fully adheres to LOTO requirements.
  • Able to investigate, sort course of action based on probability, and apply past experiences to filter solutions.
  • Implements permanent solutions leaving the final product professional and complete.
  • Accurately captures red lines and follows through with update procedures.
  • Able to describe findings and solutions to non-technical team members.


Electrical Design

  • Familiarity and able to work with national and international standards like NFPA 79, NFPA 70E, UL 508A.
  • Knowledgeable in AutoCAD Electrical. Able to maintain libraries and parts databases. Able to maintain symbol libraries.
  • Knowledgeable in EPLAN. Able to maintain libraries and parts databases. Able to maintain symbol libraries.
  • Able to read and navigate mechanical layouts in ACAD and SolidWorks
  • Contributes to development of Safety Risk Assessments, applies Safety Functions that meet performance requirements, and able to verify with SYSTEMA.
  • Produce engineering drawings describing SCCR calculations.
  • Design and document feeder and branch circuits in accordance with UL.
  • Design of industrial networks that conform to guidance set by their respective governing organization.
  • Support applications with control design solutions and support cost estimates.
  • Research, select, or apply sensors, communication technologies, or control devices for motion control, position sensing, pressure sensing, or electronic communication.


Software Design

  • Responsible for configuration of local and remote IO and assures updates rates are sufficient for machine process demands.
  • Works with Mechanical Engineers in determining sensor usage assuring the control system has good and reliable information.
  • Programs to assure machine actions and/or the environment meet expectations at each step of the process. Includes logic to handle undesirable conditions or alarm indicating the problem.
  • Writes interlocks restricting the machine from damaging themselves.
  • Writes fault tolerant or recoverable data transactions.
  • Considers all failure modes and includes a resulting programmed response or alarm.
  • Assures logical safety systems meet the required Performance Levels
  • Creates user interfaces that are easy to read and easy to navigate.
  • Produces minimal rework, deploys iterative development styles where necessary.


Customer Interfacing

  • Meets with the customer at the start of each phase, seeks to understand their expectations, and develops a plan to meet them.
  • Includes the customer in the development journey.
  • Travels to customer site, confirms machine is properly installed, and perform training.


Quality

  • Assure designs meet budget prior to release.
  • Generate a complete set of electrical schematics and BOM that is comprehensive in scope, and complete in detail.
  • Conduct internal and external design reviews, collect and apply notes and gain approval.
  • Able to produce design work which requires minimal debug or rework and free from errors.
  • Accurate and timely hours reporting and ECTF updates.
  • Works with capacity planning tools and keeps them up to date.


Communication, Schedule, Planning, & Delegation

  • Follows up with part orders and makes changes where necessary to assure electrical build schedule is achievable.
  • Monitor and coach electrical builders, assist in quality assurance and conformance to relevant codes and contracts.
  • Recommend technical design or process changes to improve efficiency, quality, or performance as a company.


Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree Electrical Engineering or AA degree in Engineering Technology and 3 years of applicable electrical engineering experience
  • Prior experience in electrical design, project management, documentation, etc.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD/EPLAN.
