Director of Equipment Engineering

Position Summary:
The Director of Equipment Engineering position is responsible for ensuring that all equipment assigned to
them on the facility is technically in operational readiness and properly supported during operations and
maintenance.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
They have technical oversight and responsibility to:
1. Provide computer-based tools, such as Crane Management Systems (CMS) screens to allow the
maintenance workforce the capabilities to efficiently diagnose and maintain equipment in a safe and
expedient manner.
2. Identify revisions/ additions to Crane System Software and Preventative Maintenance procedures.
3. Interface with Operations to determine if Rail Mounted Gantry crane (RMG) operations can be
optimized for better overall performance and reliability.
4. Assess equipment safety and readiness levels in real time.
5. Identify and coordinate projects dealing with improving equipment operational and maintenance
productivity.
6. Provide technical assistance as required including after-hours operational support.
7. Assist in the identification and acquisition of spare and replacement parts and determining if there
are acceptable levels of inventory kept on site.
8. Ensure all manuals, drawings, schematics and software are always kept current.
9. Monitor maintenance projects to ensure personnel have the proper tools and training to perform their
jobs.
10. Assist in the design and project management of new equipment acquisitions.
11. Interface with personnel as necessary on technical issues to ensure safe and proper understanding of
the problems, trouble-shooting techniques, repair procedures.
12. Investigate causes of equipment malfunctions and suggest corrections to prevent future issues.
13. Identify high failure items and suggest replacement items to increase MTBF.
14. Maintain up to date software for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and computer systems.
15. Develop CMS screens as needed by maintenance to allow workforce to troubleshoot and correct
issues without having to apply changes or forces in the PLC programs.
16. Contact equipment manufacturers for technical support, as required.
17. Coordinate the scheduling of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and Contractor Service.
18. Develop specifications for new equipment.
19. Maintain communications with other terminals using similar equipment to share issues, solutions and
best practices.
20. Provide data for productivity analysis by Operations and the Management Resource Center (MRC)
group.
21. Assist with identifying and correcting causes of Equipment Downtime.
22. Assess risk and possible safety hazards of Container Equipment maintenance and develop Job
Hazard Analysis documents as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Employee must develop rapport with all levels of employees and equipment vendors.
2. Employee must be able to communicate effectively in English.
3. Working knowledge of troubleshooting and repair procedures for Mechanical, Hydraulic, Electrical,
Electronic and Diesel Equipment as used on Container Handling Equipment.
4. Familiar with OSHA regulations and compliance as it pertains to Container Crane Maintenance and
operations, including but not limited to annual and quad inspections, lockout-tagout, release of stored
energy, ARC Flash and Medium Voltage equipment.
5. Proficient with diagnosing and assisting in repairs of digital equipment, including AC Drives and
PLC’s, Remote monitoring systems , Windows Operating systems, Scanning lasers, and other Closed
Loop Control Systems.
6. Knowledgeable in diagnosing and repair procedures for communication equipment, including fiber
optics, network cameras, ethernet and Profibus communications.
Education and/or Experience:
1. AS/BS in Electrical, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent certified Technical
Training.
2. Self-motivated with the ability to solve problems logically and quickly.
3. Experience working in unionized environment.
Physical Demands and/or Working Conditions:
The primary duties may encompass:
1. Working at heights in excess of 100 feet.
2. Working in limited spaces.
3. Working in noisy environments.
4. Require the physical ability to access equipment as needed, including climbing ladders and stairs.
Tools and Equipment:
1. The Director of Equipment Engineering must have good skills with office computer systems
including the use of spreadsheets, word processors, databases, and email.
2. Must have the ability to read schematic drawings and engineering prints and interpret PLC ladder
logic and function block.
3. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of and experience in using test equipment.
4. Proficient computer skills required to efficiently use computers for diagnosis of equipment problems.
Typical Work Hours:
The Director of Engineering- Container Crane Equipment will coordinate with the Operations and
Maintenance teams. Typical work week is Monday through Friday however due to the demanding
operational nature of this equipment, maintenance will be required both during and after cargo operations and
off hours support and weekend work will be necessary as required.
