We are currently looking for a part time Lab Aide I to work in the lab of Dr. Harmit Malik in the Basic Sciences Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. The Malik lab focuses on conducting evolutionary studies of genetic conflict to gain insight into their mechanisms and consequences.

This role will help our research program focusing on the evolution of chromatin interactions in flies. The work will involve routine maintainence of fly stocks, molecular biology (including molecular cloning, DNA and RNA extractions, sequencing), genetic experiments, and various logistical and organizational tasks associated with relocating a research program (e.g., media preparation, ordering, maintenance of lab stocks). The position is ideally suited for someone who wants to gain more hands-on research experience. The Aide will coordinate with a full-time supervisor to work full time in the summer and part time during the school year with flexibility of days to work.

Responsibilities

Job Duties:

  • Under the direction of the supervising postdoc, assist with:
    • Maintaining fly strains from several species
    • Screening genetic crosses
    • Molecular biology (e.g. molecular cloning, DNA and RNA extractions, genotyping)
    • Perform Immunophenotyping and flow cytometry to quantify and characterize sperm defects
  • Lab management support including maintaining media stocks, ordering scientific lab supplies, and maintaining equipment
  • Based on the interest and ability of the technician, they may also be solely responsible for the development and execution of independent, small-scale research projects. Successful projects in which the candidate participates may lead to authorship on scientific publications
  • Bioinformatics and data analysis
  • Regular participation in lab meetings and presentation of data
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Interest in the sciences.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Enrollment in a university-level science degree program (e.g., biology or related discipline)
  • Experience with DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, Gel electrophoresis, immunophenotyping, and flow cytometry previous experience with flies or worms is highly desirable
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Superior organizational skills, prioritization skills, and time management skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail with ability to maintain accurate records of experiments and procedures
  • Proficient computer skills (PC and/or Mac, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Must have careful attention to detail and a reliable schedule for fixed hours every week

The hourly pay range for this position is from $20.00 to $25.45, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
