Located in the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies, Center X is a community of educators working to transform public schooling to create a more just, equitable, and humane society.

Incumbent directs the UCLA Center X Science Programs.

The overarching duties of the Director of Science Programs are predominately administrative in nature, although the administration may include participation in, as well as, the overseeing of programs involving teaching, research, and/or academically-based public service.

The Director of Science Programs designs, administers, and evaluates long and short term professional development programs that align with the goals and vision of Center X, the California Science Project(CSP), and the California Subject Matter Projects(CSMP.)



Major domains of responsibility include:

fund development via contracts(sales & service) and grant writing; administering and designing programs that meet teacher, school district, and university needs, and align to state and national standards; and providing direct supervision of the Science Programs team; and actively participating in the UCLA Teacher Education Program.

Major responsibilities associated with project contracts & grants include grant management, developing scopes of work into hierarchies of sub-projects, establishing timelines, milestones, and project logic models, analyzing dependencies and critical path, securing and allocating essential human resources, monitoring and reporting on deliverables, identifying and adapting to unanticipated issues, ensure effective intra-project communication to partners, and establish an organizational structure with clear reporting lines.

Under the general direction of the Principal Investigators, and following the guidance of CSP Executive Director, the Director of Center X Science Programs is responsible for high level leadership and day-to-day project oversight to ensure all Science Program contract, grant, and projects are aligned with the mission, guiding principles, and goals of Center X, CSMP/CSP, and funding agencies; and that objectives are met on time and budget.

Incumbent serves as a critical though partner and instructor for the UCLA Teacher Education Program, specifically in regards to curriculum, pedagogy, and innovations in elementary and secondary mathematics education.

Design, plan, and implement programs for novice and experienced mathematics teachers when needed. Establish and maintain a liaison with local, county, and state departments of educations.

Qualifications

  • Urban Education Experience. Demonstrated interest in educational reform in urban schooling. (required)
  • Knowledge of University and campuswide administrative and academic organization, and of budget and personnel procedures (preferred)
  • Ability to use word processing and computing technologies to write material, develop budgets, and organize information for science education programs and courses (required)
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with educators at all levels colleagues, classroom teachers, university faculty, school district personnel, state departments. (required)
  • Ability to design and evaluate Science teaching strategies to decide on their effectiveness in specific teaching situations. (required)
  • Skill in performing a variety of duties writing, designing, acquiring speakers for different projects concurrently. (required)
  • Skill in setting deadlines and establishing priorities for self and support staff to ensure that tasks get accomplished with deadlines. (required)
  • Skill in analyzing teacher school district needs and resources available to design appropriate programs. (required)
  • Knowledge of the specific content of Science and professional development programs by virtue of having attended previous Science professional development offerings. (required)
  • Working knowledge of state and national standards and trends; basic science content in all disciplines; and of school district administrative procedures so that programs will be tailored to them and be adopted and relevant for teachers and students. (required)
  • Ability to use research methods to evaluate the effectiveness of programs. (required)
  • Ability to supervise personnel, including organizing workflow. (required)
