POSITION SUMMARY:

Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in San Antonio, TX, is seeking a Director of Music Ministry to join our vibrant parish community.

The Director of Music Ministry responsible for the effective planning, coordination, and execution of music within the liturgical celebrations of the parish.

This role involves directing musicians employed with the parish, volunteer musicians and choir members, planning music for liturgical services, and ensuring that music ministry activities align with the Church's mission and values.


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for all music activities in the parish including:

A. Vocal Choirs

A choir provides music at each of the weekend and holy day Masses. Responsibilities include rehearsing the choirs-instrumentalists and singers-and directing them at Mass.

  • Saturday 5:00 p.m. choir
  • Sunday 8:30 a.m. choir
  • Sunday 11:15 a.m. choir
  • Sunday 1:30 p.m. Spanish choir - This choir currently has its own coordinator. Responsibility of the parish music coordinator includes coordination of musical elements of worship to be consistent with the parish, as well as providing resources and communication to do their role effectively.
  • Sunday 5:00 p.m. choir (teen choir) - This choir currently has its own coordinator. Responsibility of the parish music coordinator includes coordination of musical elements of worship to be consistent with the parish, as well as providing resources and communication to do their role effectively.
  • Holy Day Masses - Organizing instrumentalists and singers, rehearsing, and directing the choirs for holy day Masses throughout the year as they occur.
  • Special Liturgical Celebrations - Triduum and Holy Week; Christmas; other high Holy Days and parish celebrations. Organizing, rehearsing, and directing instrumentalists and choirs for these celebrations. Formation, rehearsing, and directing a seasonal children's Christmas choir is the precedent. Formation of a children's choir for other liturgies is possible.
B. Cantors

Formation of cantors in their ministry. Assigning them as needed. Instrumental music coordination.

C. Instrumental music coordination

Planning for piano, organ, guitar, and solo instruments. Providing music, rehearsing, and coordinating volunteers to be at services as needed.

D. Handbell Choir

Formation, rehearsals, music planning, purchasing music, scheduling volunteers, and integration into liturgical celebrations.

E. Funerals

Selecting music as needed, preparing music, coordinating, rehearsing, and performing with volunteer musicians. Currently, music for funerals is provided by the parish. No additional stipend is expected.

F. Weddings


Resource for couples getting married, which could include discussing music and liturgical choices with them, and providing music or giving them a list of competent musicians who can play and sing for hire at their weddings.

Compensation is negotiated with the couple.

G. Other celebrations


This includes celebrations such as Penitential Services, Taiz Prayer Services, and other prayer services that come up during the year.

Coordination with Faith Formation and other staff is expected.

H. Other events

  • Vacation Bible School - Coordination with Faith Formation to provide music as needed. This is usually done with packaged recordings and video projections.
  • Concerts - As scheduled or desired. Typically Advent/Christmas. Planning, rehearsing, promoting, and conducting. Coordination with volunteers in all these areas.
  • Music Ministry sponsored events - Currently, the music ministry events are planned and organized with a "NotesWork" committee of volunteers from the music ministry. This committee will plan various events throughout the year. e.g. National Anthem at Missions baseball game, Karaoke night, music ministry retreats, festival booth, etc... This individual sits on this committee, is the staff liaison, and is involved in much of the planning.
II. Liturgy

A. Planning music

Selecting music for liturgies and other services.

Currently, this includes the gathering of volunteers in a music planning committee, which acts as an advisory and resource group.

This also includes coordinating music choices with other parish and liturgical groups and individuals. (ACTS teams, RCIA, parish missions, pastor and other priests, etc...)

B. Worship aids and liturgical resources

Purchasing worship resources for the church, including English and Spanish hymnals as needed. Designing, creating, and printing worship aids with music and texts for liturgies as needed. Reporting printing and streaming usage to the proper copyright services.

C. Other liturgical ministries

Staff resource and contact person for liturgical ministries: scheduling, acquiring resources, coordinating different aspects of liturgy.

III. Music Instruments and Technology

A. Music instruments


Acquiring, maintaining, coordinating use of, and utilizing musical instruments anywhere on campus such as pianos, organ, electronic drums, various percussion instruments, and handbells.

B. Sound systems

Acquiring, maintaining, and utilizing the church sound system and the sound system in the parish hall. This is done under the music director's supervision in coordination with the facilities manager.

IV. Other duties and functions

A. Administration

  • Attending staff meetings and other staff duties as required.
  • Budgeting for music ministry and some liturgy needs.
  • Coordination with the Bishop's office and office of worship when
Archdiocesan liturgies come to the parish.

  • Duties as assigned by the pastor.
Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
High school Diploma or equivalent
Bachelor or Master's degree preferred

Degree in Music, Liturgical Music, or a related field, or equivalent experience in music direction within a church setting is recommended.


Experience:
At least four (4) years' experience in parish setting
Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred

License and Credentials:
Reliable transportation
Valid driver license
Valid vehicle insurance

Minimum Knowledge and Skills:
Experience with computer software and Microsoft Office Applications.
Must be detail oriented, organized, self-motivated, work well independently and on a team.
Must have good written and verbal skills.
Must have good critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate and motivate volunteer musicians and choirs.
Proficiency in playing the piano or organ and a comprehensive understanding of liturgical music.

Practicing Catholic with a thorough understanding of Catholic liturgy and traditions, and a commitment to the values and mission of St.

Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and special church events as required.

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and occasionally required to climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds with assistance if needed.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Musically proficient in both Spanish and English, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.
