The Department of Criminal Justice Services is seeking a collaborative and innovative team player to serve as a full-time Office of Safer Communities Research Analyst in Richmond, Virginia. This position will perform data analysis, assessment of trends around violent crime and community strengths, and to identify best practices for violence and firearm crime prevention and intervention. This position is responsible for writing reports and presentations describing the research for the Department's statewide violent crime reduction grant programs; synthesizing and facilitating data sharing regarding violent crime reduction strategies among state/local agencies and relevant stakeholders; preparing annual and other reports as needed or directed to comply with state and federal and other requirements; and meeting the needs of the Department of Criminal Justice Services' Office of Safer Communities.. What you will do:

• Support the Office of Safer Communities to become a clearinghouse for data regarding community violence and violence intervention and prevention efforts, including firearms violence.

• Manage statewide violence intervention and prevention data. Create and maintain high standards for data acquisition and data management. Analyze all relevant data submitted to DCJS from related agencies or other performance measures databases.

• Review trends in firearms and domestic violence intervention and prevention or topical issues for dissemination and/or oral presentation to relevant community groups, outside focus groups, government officials, and the public.

• Facilitate sharing of data regarding firearm violence and firearm violence intervention and prevention programs among state and local agencies, including local health departments, institutions of higher education, research institutions, hospitals and other medical care facilities, community-based organizations, and law-enforcement agencies.

• Analyze, understand, and advise others on program evaluation process and results.

• Facilitate sharing of data regarding firearm violence and firearm violence intervention and prevention programs among state and local agencies, including local health departments, institutions of higher education, research institutions, hospitals and other medical care facilities, community-based organizations, and law-enforcement agencies.

• Analyze data and present data trends for preparation of annual priorities across relevant grant programs. Evaluate state/locality sponsored and community-based violence prevention and intervention programs.

• Analyze and report on progress of funded projects, by funding source.

• Evaluate state and community-based violence intervention programs and policies that receive funding through the Office of Safer Communities.

Minimum Qualifications

What the ideal candidate must possess:
● Demonstrated skill and experience with conducting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative research.
● Excellent oral and written communication skills.
● Demonstrated skill and experience with evaluating existing research.
● Demonstrated experience with literature reviews and internet research.
● Demonstrated skill and experience with using spreadsheets and databases. Fluency in Excel skills including creation of formulae, pivot tables, and relational data bases.
● Demonstrated skill and experience with communicating findings to audiences with diverse backgrounds.
● Demonstrated skill and experience managing projects and working independently with interagency and interdisciplinary groups.
● High level of collaborative and cooperative skills with a variety of staffs.
● Knowledge of juvenile justice, criminal justice, or victim services programs.
● Ability to use data to identify trends and put those trends into context of relevant policy and process decision making.
● Experience with performance measure creation/tracking and program evaluation or similar process.
● Ability to think strategically and cross culturally, and independently implement new initiatives and projects.
● Ability to articulate, both orally and in written form, clear and concise program objectives and goals and summarize achievements of programs in reports and other documents as requested.
● Documented experience working as an active, contributing team member, as well as an independent and self-motivated employee.
● Demonstrated ability to meet critical deadlines, handle multiple assignments, changing priorities, and ensure timeliness and quality of completed assignments.

Additional Considerations


• Demonstrated skill and experience in juvenile justice, criminal justice, or victim services programs.

• Demonstrated knowledge of criminal justice intervention and prevention work.

• Familiarity with relevant local and statewide prevention, intervention, and enforcement policies or practices.

• Experience with research on root cause of firearms violence, or intervention and prevention of firearms violence.

Special Instructions

Interview candidates may be required to demonstrate the skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory performance of work. The candidate selected for the position must successfully complete a criminal background investigation and complete and submit a Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) which will be entered into the Federal E-Verify system to confirm identity and work authorization. The individual may also be responsible for submitting an annual Statement of Personal Economic Interest. In addition, the selected candidate who begins original employment or re-employment in this position must serve a 12-month probationary period effective from the date of employment. The anticipated starting salary range is $70,000 to $82,000 plus the state's benefits package.
