This role is based in Evanston, Illinois.

The Junior Swim Instructor holds a beginner position contributing to creating an enjoyable and inclusive environment for a diverse group of swimmers. Responsible for providing swim lessons and supporting the Learn-to-Swim program of the YWCA Evanston/North Shore Flying Fish Aquatics program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Swim Instruction (90%)

  • Conducts swim lessons for individuals of all ages and skill levels.
  • Assists various community groups during swim lessons.
  • Supports certified lifeguards in supervising swimmers when necessary.
  • Evaluates swimmers when not actively teaching.
  • Offers coverage as a backup instructor and aids other instructors upon request.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (10%)

  • Attends staff training sessions and engages in agency activities.
  • Pursues ongoing professional growth and development.
  • Comprehends and follows the guidelines outlined in the YWCA Evanston/North Shore Employee Handbook.
  • Abides by all relevant safety protocols at the state and national levels.
  • Executes other tasks as assigned by management, potentially involving facility upkeep.

REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and/or Training: Participation on a middle school or high school swim team with knowledge of freestyle and backstroke

Technology/Equipment: Basic familiarity with swim gear

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and/or Training: Minimum one year of experience delivering introductory and intermediate swim instruction.

Language: Fluent in Spanish and English

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Intermittent (less than 15%), Occasional (15-45%), Frequent (50-75%), and Continuous (over 75%).

  • Ability to withstand prolonged periods of standing and moving in both warm and cool water, climbing stairs or ladders, reaching, and extending arms and shoulders.
  • Occasional lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Mobility throughout the facility is necessary.
  • Operation of computer controls and equipment is expected.

The mental and physical demands outlined above are essential for successful job performance.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Staff are required to work in swimwear, spending majority of time in warm or cool water.
  • When not in water, staff must be able to stand on the pool deck in warm, humid conditions.
  • Workspace may be shared among employees.
