Work is performed in the communication center in a constantly stressful environment. Assigned to day and night and split shifts; work is performed on weekends and holidays.

Operates all communications equipment, such as two-way radio, automated data communications systems, computer aided dispatch system (CAD) and related computer filing systems; NextGen

  • 911 equipment, telephone and paging systems, recording systems, Teletypewriter for the hearing impaired (TTY), the Criminal Justice


Information System/National Crime Information Center/Automated License and Registration System (CJIS/NCIC,ALARS), Police station CCTV surveillance cameras, standard office equipment and other related communications systems.


Makes constant contact with other town departments, state and federal offices and officials, and the general public requiring excellent customer service skills; most contacts are made by telephone, radio, mail, fax and walk-ins and require the quickest possible response for police, fire, and medical services in an efficient and diligent manner.


Essential Functions:

Monitors and responses to telephone and radio communications; responds to all emergencies, complaints and requests received; determines the nature, extent, location, callers name and contact number of every emergency reported.

Determines the priority and response required (Police/Fire/EMS, or other); alerts the appropriate emergency personnel in a timely manner, using radio and paging systems, and/or other manner in accordance with departmental established policies and procedures; keeps supervisory personnel aware of priority calls and equipment status.


Maintains constant and diligent monitoring of the radio system; provides responding personnel with follow-up information necessary for the safety of those involved; coordinates back-up support activities involving off duty personnel and notifying other police agencies, fire, EMS, town departments, hospitals, utility companies, and others, when needed and/or requested.


Maintains accurate and complete computer entries regarding day to day communication/dispatching operations; maintains police and fire incident reporting on CAD system; provides and assists police officers with background investigations of all persons, vehicles, etc.

encountered using computer system files; enters relevant information into the computer system files regarding missing and/or wanted persons, articles, vehicles, weapons, and other properties.


Communicates via telephone or radio with other agencies such as utility companies, alarm services, ambulance companies, town and state highway departments, animal control officers, towing agencies, courts, hospitals, and town departments, etc.

Operates the nuclear power plant notification system; implements portions of the Radiological Emergency Plan.


Ascertains that all radio equipment is properly functioning and reports any breakdown or defects immediately upon discovering them to the appropriate person or agency.

Maintains all certifications, licenses and professional associations in order to keep abreast of current dispatching procedures.


Answers inquiries from, and provides information to the public concerning such things as directions, special events, municipal services, etc.; directs the public to appropriate sources of information and appropriate personnel.


Performs various clerical functions including data entry computer work, typing, transcribing, filing and maintenance of records; prepares and maintains up to date telephone listing, including confidential listing for hospitals, veterinarians, medical examiners, law enforcement agencies, police and fire personnel, court personnel, public transportation and utilities, and local businesses; prepares, updates and maintains street and residency listing (Master Street Address Guide (MSAG)) for use by emergency personnel.

Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates.

Education and Experience:

High school graduation or equivalent; one-year experience in a general clerical position involving work with the public; some work experience in emergency services is helpful; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CPR Training required. E911 Telecommunicator Certificate from the Commonwealth of MA preferred.
