Occupational Summary Behavioral Technician Child and Family Mental Health and Community PsychiatryThe young adult peer support team in the Division of Child and Family Mental Health and Community Psychiatry started conducting peer-to-peer coaching work in 2016, including an initial pilot research program and a NIH-funded study where adolescents and young adults with chronic health conditions receive peer coaching.

Alongside the deployment of this coaching intervention as part of these research endeavors, a non-research peer coaching program was created to support adolescent/young adult cancer survivors cared for at the Duke Cancer Institute (DCI) run by the PiCASO team called Bobby's Coaches.

The Peer Coach/Behavioral Technician is a young adult cancer survivor and as a Bobby's Coaches team member will provide consultation and social support to adolescent and young adult patients receiving services within the Duke University Health System, regarding navigating the healthcare system and engaging in self-management related to cancer survivorship.

Work Performed Serve as a peer health and wellness coach for adolescents and young adult years of age) cancer patient/survivors via telephone.

Guide and prompt adolescents and young adult cancer survivors to become active participants in their healthcare, provide socio-emotional support in navigating and managing clinical and other services related to their condition within the Duke University System and broader community.

Assist adolescents and young adult cancer survivors with reaching their self-identified goals.

Effectively utilized the shared experience of cancer survivorship to support adolescents and young adult cancer survivors as they navigate transitions of cancer survivorship and young adulthood.

Encourage adolescents and young adult cancer survivors to contact the appropriate medical and mental health professionals when they have a concern.

Complete initial and ongoing peer coaching trainings as provided by the Bobby's Coaches team. Compile and keep records of information concerning services rendered to patients. Maintain regular contact with the Peer Coach Program Staff/Coordinator and attend biweekly supervisory meetings at Duke. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
