  • The Providence Public School District (PPSD) serves approximately 22,000 students (about the seating capacity of Madison Square Garden) attending our 37 schools. PPSD employs more than 3,200 professionals who work in and provide support to our schools, which include 20 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 11 high schools, and 2 public district charter schools. Of our employees, about 2,000 are educators, and over 600 others directly support our schools' students and families.
Our schools are diverse learning communities. Approximately 68% of our students are Latinx, 15% Black, 7% White, 4% Asian, 5.5% Multi-racial and 1% Native American. Approximately 40% of students are multilingual, and about 16% receive special education services. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Our students and families speak more than 55 languages and hail from 91 countries of origin.

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, the Director is responsible for providing leadership and support for district-wide reading development and literacy curriculum and instruction.

The Director will be responsible for fully implementing these programs as outlined in the responsibilities described below.

The Director will lead the vision and work for district-wide adherence to and implementation of Rhode Island's and PPSD's MTSS Policy.

A significant focus will be on developing, implementing, and monitoring the district's focus on literacy and intervention. The Director works closely with the Director of MLL and the Director of Special Education.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Rhode Island District Level Administrator Certificate
  • Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and/or Building Level Administrator
    and one or more of the following:
  • RI Elem. 1-6 with MS English Ext. 5-8 or MS English Ext. 5-8 Certification or-
  • Secondary English Grades 7-12 or-
  • PK-12 Reading Specialist-
  • Right to Read Proficiency within one year of hire-
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in the areas of the science of reading, dyslexia, literacy, curriculum and instruction, or administration/educational leadership

  • 5 years of outstanding teaching or related experience in reading and English Language Arts-
  • ESL Preferred-

  • Provide leadership for K12 districtwide reading programming inclusive of standardsbased reading curriculum development, resource selection, menu of interventions, and staff development, including summer and afterschool programs.
  • Coordinates with K5 Libraries on developing and utilizing budgets to enhance school/district literacy programs.
  • Development, implementation, and monitoring of the District's K12 Reading Framework with a special focus on early literacy and intervention in K
  • Coordinates proven, researchbased methods, expertise in the science of reading, and strategies for curriculum reform.
  • Collects and analyzes data to improve products and services delivered to schools to support student achievement.
  • Provides leadership in designing and developing new programs and initiatives to meet identified needs.
  • Meet regularly with reading teachers and ELA department and teacher leaders to ensure vertical and horizontal articulation of curriculum and instructional vision.
  • Play a leadership role in the design and implementation of a multitiered system of supports.
  • Develop a formalized, agespecific, intervention plan to address the readingrelated learning needs of students who are behind grade level.
  • Develop plans for and implement a multitiered professional learning program to ensure district teachers achieve a level of proficiency in or awareness of the knowledge and practices of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy.
  • Provides professional development, training, and general oversight of the work of reading interventionists and K5 library media specialists.
  • Coordinate the design, support, and implementation of quality professional development programs in Reading for principals, coaches, teachers, and support staff consistent with district, state required, and national standards for professional development.
