Ion Source Engineer II

Position Summary

Michigan State University (MSU) operates the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. Hosting what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, FRIB enables scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics as one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities. MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report.

This position affords an exciting opportunity to become part of the world-class FRIB Laboratory that enables unique discovery opportunities in nuclear science.

Purpose:

The Ion Source Engineer II will prepare, operate, and maintain the Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion sources used for beam injection into the Laboratory FRIB Accelerator and SEE project.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Responsible for operating and maintaining ECR ion source in support of FRIB experimental schedule or FSEE experimental schedule. Ensure that scheduled beams are brought up in a timely way and maintained at beam list levels as requested. Support and provide expertise in the fabrication, assembly, or repair of ECR ion source and associated systems and subsystems. Prepare ion source for experiment including oven or gas setup and loading into ion source. Help design, fabricate, and assemble equipment and systems related to ECR ion sources and assist in solving technical design problems.Operates and instructs staff in the operation of the ECR ion source. Updates documentation related to ECR ion source and related equipment and /or components. Develop ion source beam tunes for new isotope beams or cocktail beams and work on the improvement of ion source equipment and control programs. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Skilled in engineering for vacuum systems, high voltage, RF power generators, and magnetic fields.Knowledge of mechanical engineering including calculation, design, fabrication, and machining.Knowledge of control systems - programmable logic controllers (PLC).Ability to troubleshoot complex systems and perform root cause analysis. Ability to work with machine interfaces and perform data analysis.Ability to follow instructions and work processes.Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or physics; three to five years of progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting and computer systems; and may require experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems, including file transfer; experience in the use of exotic metals, including knowledge of their properties, in the fabrication and assembly of sophisticated research equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
