Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Finance and Operations Information Technology Department provides innovative, and responsive technology services to the University’s business units in support of the University’s mission of teaching, research, and public service. The department strives to provide technology to improve business processes and communication, reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction.

Position Summary:

The Systems Administrator provides proactive technical application support for Finance & Operations (F&O) and core units of the Division of Institutional Integrity and Risk Management (IIRM). As a member of the Finance & Operations IT technical support team (Service Center of Excellence), primary responsibilities include overseeing technology systems with a focus on configuration, access control, troubleshooting, and user training.

Duties include providing front-line support for Microsoft Active Directory, network-based applications and services, resolving hardware and software issues, configuring security settings, storage management, conducting in-depth troubleshooting, and providing Level 2 support to customers and a team of technicians. In addition to supporting the technical architecture, this position regularly collaborates with customers, technicians, vendors, and administrators to maintain quality customer service.

Other responsibilities include:

(1) Support: Provides comprehensive technical knowledge across a large variety of network, hardware, and software areas to solve complex issues; maintains up-to-date proficiency across several technical environments, development platforms, and applications to deliver high-level technical support consistently.

(2) Development/Programming: Installs and configures server software, including operating systems, databases, and applications as required. Fine-tunes and optimizes configurations to maintain satisfactory performance levels. Monitors, identifies, and recommends system enhancements necessary to ensure adequate performance and capacity to meet application service objectives.

(3) Security: Maintains all physical and virtual F&O servers at the latest feasible revision and patch level. Contributes to the development of F&O hosted server configurations, including group policy management, firewall management, and troubleshooting.

(4) Project Management: Consults with administrators and staff to improve administrative processes, identifying opportunities for solutions using existing technologies or exploring the potential of new technologies. Provides recommendations based on user community feedback regarding technology needs or potential technical solutions.

(5) Quality Control and Reporting: Ensures configurations and settings adhere to established standards; identifying and rectifying any performance issues.

(6) Consultation: Conducts thorough analysis and assessment of client needs to develop effective and appropriate solutions to issues. Engages in preliminary and ongoing critical evaluation of customer needs and processes with client and organizational goals in mind. Develops technical solutions and offers alternatives and recommendations for the best course of action.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Master’s and 1-2 years’ experience; or Bachelor’s and 2-4 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Demonstrated proficiency in implementing and executing testing procedures for newly developed and updated software packages. Knowledge of and experience with installing, configuring, and maintaining systems software, including operating systems, system-level and middleware components, and application software. Familiarity with a range of relational database platforms such as SQL Server.

Knowledge of and strict adherence to standards and protocols for automated operations and storage management methodologies to prevent operational disruptions.

Proficiency in identifying and addressing system-related challenges; ability to proactively prevent future occurrences. Ability to resolve both routine and non-routine issues efficiently. Ability to effectively convey technical matters to non-technical stakeholders.

Ability to consult on client inquiries and needs that require the implementation or creation of a custom solution. Ability to consult with senior-level decision-makers to develop strategic, forward-looking alternatives and foster client support of organizational objectives.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Active Directory, as well as Microsoft desktop and server operating systems, within medium to large-scale operational environments.

Demonstrated knowledge of DNS, DHCP, VLANs, firewall regulations, Group Policy deployment and management. Proficiency in Microsoft SCCM, including update services and application/package deployment. Experience with scripting languages like PowerShell or JavaScript. Experience with SQL Server database administration and investigation and solving system-related program issues.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements:

Ability to frequently travel to the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and the Town of Chapel Hill, including frequent pedestrian travel and/or transport of equipment which requires a valid North Carolina Driver’s License. Ability to move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, manipulating hand tools such as screw drivers, power drills and cutting equipment, and performing tasks on ladders or enclosed spaces, with or without a reasonable accommodation. Maintenance of equipment requires strong motor skills and physical mobility.

Ability to adhere to safety requirements by wearing appropriate personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, hard hats, full-length pants, and closed-toe shoes. Ability to recognize colors and shapes.

Ability to perform work duties within various service call locations including but not limited to construction or renovation zones, hospital premises, chemical and radiation storage facilities, warehouse storage zones, and high-traffic parking areas. As a designated mandatory (emergency) employee, the employee is subject to significant physical effort, depending upon the emergency’s nature. Occasional outdoor work or travel in adverse weather conditions may be necessary due to the location and criticality of certain equipment.

Demonstrated ability to identify and avoid hazards that may lead to injury, whether physical, electrical, chemical, biological, or otherwise.
