Major/Essential Functions
Provides effective and collaborative academic advising for Phase 2 and 3 (clinical) (and Phase 1/preclinical as needed) students.

Instructs Phase 2 and 3 students (and Phase 1 students as needed) regarding strategies related to academic planning, monitoring, and maintaining successful academic progression through the MD curriculum.

Provides scheduled and as needed academic counseling to assist Phase 2 and 3 (clinical) (and Phase 1/preclinical as needed) students in
self-evaluation (and remediation if needed) of strategies used to support students' effective acquisition of medical knowledge, completion of each academic year's curricular requirements, and overall maintaining as expected progression through the MD degree program.

Assesses and reviews: a) Current academic advising best practices and materials b) Services and resources supplied by the SOM to Phase 2 and 3 students.

Uses data and case management tools to identify which of their assigned Phase 2 and 3 students are in need of additional academic and/or learning support.

Provide in-person academic advising support to Phase 2 and 3 students on the both SOM regional campuses (Amarillo and Odessa). Travel to Amarillo and Odessa clinical campuses a minimum of twice per month.

  •  Advanced degree, certification, or dedicated training in adult learning, medical or biological sciences, or a student support related area. 
  • Prior acadmic advising experience working with learners in a medical school or related health profession education setting.
