Position OverviewSince 1873, social sorority and fraternity organizations have grown to become a vital part of the University of Kansas history and tradition. Today, the sorority and fraternity community represents over 40 organizations with more than 4,100 students committed to our core values: Academic Achievement, Civic & Community Engagement, Personal & Professional Development, and Holistic Wellness. Sorority and Fraternity Life (SFL) is an administrative unit of the University which provides support and advocacy for these organizations. The organizations are represented by four different governing councils: the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and the Panhellenic Association (PHA).

The Senior Associate Director for External Relations in the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life is responsible for leading strategic initiatives to strengthen the sorority and fraternity community, resulting in an welcoming, engaged, and healthy community. The Senior Associate Director for External Relations holds primary responsibility on behalf of the university for cultivating relationships and communicating with national organizations, house corporations, advisors, and community groups. The Senior Associate Director for External Relations also serves as the primary liaison between the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life and university affiliates, including the KU Endowment Association and the KU Alumni Association. The Senior Associate Director for External Relations is responsible for all communications strategies and supervises at least one full-time professional to support communications and external relations. The Senior Associate Director for External Relations reports to the Director of the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life.

Student Affairs at the University of Kansas makes learning possible through programs and services designed to support students across their KU experience. Student Affairs includes seventeen departments which coordinate services designed to assist students in achieving their academic and personal goals. Student Affairs serves as an advocate for students across the University community.
Job Description60% External Relations
  • Establish and maintain working relationships and collaborations with chapter advisors, (inter)national headquarters organizations, house corporations and directors, and other stakeholders. Maintain updated rosters for all external stakeholder audiences.
  • Serve as a resource for students, families, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders on issues related to sorority and fraternity life.
  • Serve as the campus expert on Sorority and Fraternity Life external partnerships, including unique relationships with and needs of various chapter advisors, (inter)national headquarters organizations, house corporations and directors, and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinate the Alumni Advisory Council and the Alumni Executive Council in collaboration with university administrators. Establish and maintain regular meeting schedules, agendas, and priorities for both groups. Serve as the primary staff contact for both groups and help to facilitate communication with other university leaders as needed.
  • Coordinate university relationships with chapter house directors. Serve as the primary contact for the house director's needs related to the university. Facilitate regular meetings and educational training with house directors.
  • Establish regular and ongoing training for chapter advisors, house corporation representatives, and house directors.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the KU Alumni Association. Establish collaborative relationships with the KU Alumni Association. Identify programming opportunities and innovative partnerships to benefit both the Sorority and Fraternity Life community and the KU Alumni Association.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the KU Endowment Association. Establish collaborative relationships with the KU Endowment Association. Identify innovative partnerships to benefit both the Sorority and Fraternity Life community and the KU Endowment Association. In collaboration with the director, ensure responsible financial stewardship of all endowed funds associated with the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life, including awarding available scholarship funds to relevant chapters and members.
  • Serve as the initial point of contact for organizations wishing to establish new chapters and/or return to affiliated organization status. Coordinate chapter re/integration processes within Sorority and Fraternity Life and with other relevant Student Affairs staff.

25% Communications and Assessment

  • Set a vision for the office brand and communications strategy in collaboration with the Director. Oversee office communications strategy and products.
  • Ensure all external partnerships and relationships are supported by timely, frequent, accurate, and open communication tactics.
  • Supervise the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life Communications Coordinator. Coordinate all unit communications strategies with the Student Affairs Communications Specialist.
  • Oversee the implementation of assessments to evaluate the effectiveness/success of Sorority and Fraternity Life programs.
  • Track data-based trends in the Sorority and Fraternity Life community within and beyond KU. Identify trends over time and projections for future community needs.
  • In collaboration with the Director and the Communications Coordinator, develop communications tools and pieces to communicate the Sorority and Fraternity Life strategic plan, assessment results, and data on the community to external partners and audiences.
  • Collaborate with peer institutions and professional organizations to monitor national trends and implement best practices within KU’s Sorority and Fraternity Life community. Advise external partners on these national trends and best practices, as relevant.
  • Coordinate the department’s communications and interactions with prospective KU students and families.

15% Other Duties as Assigned

  • Support chapter and council programming and Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life initiatives, as requested by the director.
  • Supervise additional staff on an interim or permanent basis, as needed.
  • Serve on university-wide and Student Affairs committees, as needed.
  • Respond to emergency situations within the sorority and fraternity community.
Position RequirementsThis position is required to work on-site.Required Qualifications
  1. Master’s degree in higher education, college student personnel, educational leadership, counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field; or a juris doctorate degree.
  2. Three years of full-time professional work experience in higher education.
  3. Three years of experience advising and/or working directly with social fraternities/sororities on a college campus, or three years of experience working with a university-based endowment or alumni association.
  4. Applied knowledge of best practices and national trends impacting sorority and fraternity life, alumni relations, and/or university endowment organizations as demonstrated through work history.
  5. Experience supervising professional and/or student staff.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of students, staff, faculty, administrators, and other members of the community.
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills as evidenced by application materials and interview.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Ability to collaborate with internal and external constituents and foster productive relationships across audiences.
  2. Membership in the Association for Fraternity/Sorority Advisors, Council for Advancement and Support of Education, and/or relevant alumni relations professional association.
  3. Commitment to professional development and professional associations as evidenced by memberships and/or presentations.
  4. Experience developing, implementing, and assessing strategic plans and priorities related to Sorority and Fraternity Life, as evidenced by work experience.
  5. Experience managing communications strategies for a wide range of internal and external audiences, as evidenced by work experience.
  6. Experience managing external and/or volunteer board organizations, as evidenced by work experience.
  7. Experience in managing confidential and sensitive information.
  8. Demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations.
  9. Commitment to creating welcoming educational environments for college students, as demonstrated through work experience.
