Stanford Medicine is a premier research-intensive medical school that is nationally recognized for quality patient care and leading-edge technology. The Office of Medical Alumni Relations and the affiliated Stanford Medicine Alumni Association’s mission is to Reach, Inspire, Serve and Engage, MD, PHD, MS, BS, resident, fellows, and post-doctoral alumni (25,000 strong) through engaging outreach events and programming; alumni mentoring and sponsorship programs; meaningful volunteer opportunities for alumni; and the dissemination of informative communications.

Job Purpose
The Director of Medical Alumni Relations is responsible for overseeing all aspects of a comprehensive alumni program. S/he is responsible for the overall planning, implementation, and management of programs and services to enhance long-term relationships between and among the school’s alumni, students, faculty, the broader community. The Director works closely to align strategic objectives with the Office of the Dean of the School of Medicine, Senior Associate Deans for Medical and Bioscience Education, and the Directors of the 6 other schools within Stanford University, in collaboration with the Chief Alumni Relations Officer of the Stanford Alumni Association.

Key activities include campus and regional events, student/alumni programs, alumni communications, alumni digital initiatives including website and social media programs, alumni affinity groups, sponsorships, cross-department collaborations, and several high-profile annual alumni events, including the medical school’s Alumni Day, Women in Medicine and Science Conference, and lifetime achievement Alumni Awards. The Director oversees a small team of direct reports and an independent budget for alumni activities.

The Director also serves ex-officio as the Executive Director of the Stanford Medicine Alumni Association and its 30 elected Board of Governors working weekly with the President to guide alumni strategy and interface with senior university personnel.

In this role, you will:

Events and Program Development

  • Manage all alumni relations planning and strategy for Stanford School of Medicine including the development, implementation, and assessment of all programs, events, budgets, and services
  • Manage the Office of Alumni Relations by setting individual and team goals, planning and implementing upwards of 30 alumni programs annually, managing numerous alumni volunteer groups and collaborations with departments within the School of Medicine and across Stanford University’s campus.
  • Work with faculty to develop and implement a robust series of premier campus and regional programs leveraging the expertise and thought leadership of School of Medicine faculty and alumni.
  • Prepare meeting objectives and agendas, event briefings and talking points for Dean, Senior Associate Dean, faculty, board president, and lead volunteers for all high-profile alumni events and board meetings.

Attract, Develop, Motivate, Retain Staff

  • Responsible for department operations, including the recruitment, management, development, performance assessment and retention of alumni relations team and seasonal contract staff.

Engage Board of Directors and Volunteers

  • Serve as the Executive Director of the Stanford Medicine Alumni Association and its 30 elected Board of Governors. This includes working with the BOG executive team on the identification, recruitment and training of medical school alumni to serve in elected volunteer roles, and to lead committee-directed events and programs.The Executive Director also oversees the deployment of key group of volunteer leaders in support of the school through mentoring, admissions, and diversity initiatives.

Represent Alumni Relations, MCD and the University

  • Represent Medical Alumni Relations at monthly Medical Education Leadership meetings with senior managers of departments and programs across the School of Medicine and Stanford Health Care, monthly meetings with university-wide alumni leaders, and quarterly meetings with peer institution alumni leaders
  • Provide leadership and support on issues/projects related to School of Medicine and university alumni initiatives. Support collaborations with Medical Center Development Office where alumni involvement is anticipated and when alumni inquire about giving.
  • Collaborate with campus partners. This includes actively networking with fellow professional schools, the Office of Medical Education, Office of Graduate Education and Post-doctoral Affairs (bioscience), Office of Graduate Medical Education (residencies), and the Stanford Alumni Association to ensure that Medical Alumni Relations is fully leveraging resources to maximize alumni engagement and generating goodwill.

Operations, Strategy, and Budget Management

  • Participate in strategic and long-term planning for the Office of Alumni Relations. This includes managing the strategic planning of alumni activities, developing and managing the budget, and maintaining a record of measurable accomplishments and metrics for the department and its initiatives.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.Advanced degree (e.g., MBA) is preferred.
  • Experience with non-profit or academic institutions, alumni relations and board/volunteer management; Knowledge of Stanford University and/or familiarity with medical or bioscience communities is a plus.

  • Excellent strategic, organizational, and project management skills, and the ability to simultaneously plan and execute multiple projects.
  • Strong track record as a relationship builder and collaborator, including the ability to build effective long-term relationships both internally and externally with all levels of professionals.
  • Ability to understand customer needs, show good judgment and diplomacy, and a high tolerance for ambiguity.
  • Computer proficiency and the ability to learn new systems.

Certificates and Licenses Required

  • Valid California Non-commercial Class Driver’s License.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent work on evenings and weekends.
  • May work outdoors.
  • Some local or domestic travel.

The expected pay range for this position is $144,000 to $183,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
