Purpose of Position

The University of North Dakota (UND) and the College of Engineering and Mines seek to hire an open-rank faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering with expertise in hypersonics who can contribute to school of Aerospace and department of Mechanical Engineering. This is one of three positions offered at the University of North Dakota in space, satellites, and national security security and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to UND’s National Security Initiative, which is a campus-wide effort to grow UND’s portfolio of research and education programs related to national security. This will be a 9-month position and may be tenure-track or an offer of tenure may be made based on a candidate’s documented record of achievement and subject to approval from the Department, College, University, and the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education. This position is contingent upon the availability of funding. This position will be primarily on campus (not remote).

Assistant/Associate/Full Professor candidates must meet the school/college/university standards for appointment to the rank, including significant experience/accomplishments in the candidate’s area of expertise. Assistant/Associate/Full Professor candidates must also meet State Board of Higher Education guidelines for consideration of tenure. Full Professor candidates must also have national distinction, international recognition, and a substantial scholarly record in the candidate’s area of expertise.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successful applicant must have a demonstrated dedication to excellence in engineering education and the potential to develop an externally funded research program.

The successful applicant will have the following primary responsibilities and duties:

  • Instruction and research in the areas of hypersonics, and national security
  • Teaching up to a 2/2 course load in their discipline, both on-campus and at-a-distance, potentially including both classroom and laboratory settings. Initial appointment may include a reduced teaching load to initiate research activity.
  • Advising students in course planning and fulfilling graduation requirements.
  • Communicating effectively in English with students, families, faculty, staff and other professional colleagues in person and at-a-distance (phone, email, etc.)
  • Utilizing computer hardware and software to carry out teaching, research, and service responsibilities to their department
  • Operating laboratory equipment and instrumentation appropriate to the candidate’s field
  • Participating in school, college/university, and professional service activities
  • Conducting engineering scholarly activities including grant preparation and submission, mentoring of graduate student researchers, publication of results, and development of an externally funded research program
  • All faculty members are expected to contribute service within the department, college, university, and professional community. Required Competencies
  • Broad knowledge of academic and commercial development relevant to hypersonic aircraft and national security
  • Broad knowledge of emerging national security needs and associated basic and applied Science and Technology programs
  • Proven ability to operate effectively as a team player and leader who works effectively with superiors, peers, and subordinates and has strong interpersonal skills, independent judgment, and understanding of funding opportunities in the field of hypersonic aircraft
  • Deep understanding of the organization, leadership structure, and decision-making process of the U.S. Department of Defense
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance and work on classified research
  • Experience or demonstrated ability working with diverse groups.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students
Minimum Requirements
  • Earned PhD degree in a relevant Engineering, Computing, or Science discipline
  • Ability to obtain national security clearance, which requires the applicant to be a U.S. Citizen or have a Permanent Resident card to work on projects involving International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)
  • Successful completion of a Standard Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the fields of aerospace vehicles, aerospace dynamics and control, aerospace materials and coatings, and computational propulsion or aerodynamics.
  • Experience in the National Security applications of engineering or computer science
  • Prior experience working on Department of Defense research
  • Industrial or military experience in national security
  • Teaching experience in hypersonic and/or national security-related topics at both the undergraduate and graduate level
