Iowa City, United States Spencer Stuart Full time
UNIVERSITY OF IOWA DEPARTMENT OF UROLOGY
Located within the Carver College of Medicine, one of the top public medical schools in the country, the UI Department of Urology has a distinguished record in research, education, and clinical care. The department has 16 faculty and 20 advanced practice providers in three subspecialty divisions, along with approximately 17 residents, 2 fellows, and 27 staff. The residency program, which consistently receives high marks in annual ACGME surveys, recently expanded its annual class size and will accommodate up to 20 trainees by 2028.

The faculty includes national and international leaders in many subspecialty and research areas, with $2.1 million awarded in external funding in FY24 and consistent NIH funding over the past 29 years. UI Department of Urology faculty maintain a robust presence locally, regionally, and nationally, and in recent years, many have held leadership positions in many national organizations. Urologic oncology faculty in the department have pioneered the use of sequential intravesical gemcitabine and docetaxel, and other multi-agent chemotherapy combinations, as alternatives to BCG immunotherapy for bladder salvage in patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. The department’s faculty offer novel or advanced offerings for UI Health Care patients, including Blue Light fluorescent cystoscopy, MRI/ultrasound fusion guided biopsy, and an at-home bladder pressure monitor for patients with neurogenic bladder.

UI Urology is known worldwide for its educational, research, and clinical expertise. The department is actively involved in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate education and residents and clinical and basic science fellows are expected to participate in the departmental research effort. These educational activities provide basic knowledge of genitourinary tract anatomy, function, and disease and offer career preparation in clinical or academic urologic surgery. To achieve these aims and to keep abreast of the expansion of urological knowledge, UI faculty has developed various areas of special interest, including general urology, urologic oncology, pediatric urology, andrology, sexual dysfunction, urolithiasis, urodynamics and reconstructive urology, and laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
