Job Description

With oversight from the Senior Grants and Contracts Officer, the Grants and Financial Intern will assist the team with data, research, and documentation review, as part of the Legal Services Technical Unit. This includes programs that provide legal services to unaccompanied children, asylum seekers, and Afghan families. (S)he will play a key role in helping ensure that relevant data (qualitative and quantitative), backup documentation, resources, and research are readily available for monthly invoicing, internal reports, and grant reporting. The intern will also assist with special projects that include but are not limited to: research for Childrenâs Legal Services (CLS) Spanish language program, graphic design (using Canva) for newsletters and annual reports, CLS weekly email update, and support the expansion of a national legal services mapping project for unaccompanied children. The intern may perform a series of limited clerical and administrative duties, as needed.


COMMITMENT: 4-6 months, at least 12-15 hours per week. Additional hours may be possible during the summer.

This is an unpaid internship position. No financial compensation, including compensation for relocation, is available. 

IRC offers a $3,500 internship scholarship and eligible interns would be encouraged to apply. Please note that this is a competitive scholarship, so receiving an award is not guaranteed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist Senior Grants and Contracts Officer with compiling data and documentation and ensuring that required documentation is submitted by offices in a timely manner and in accordance with established guidelines for monthly invoicing and grant reporting.
  • Help with research and sharing relevant resources and events that may be of interest to the Legal Services teams (for Spanish language program, weekly updates, etc). 
  • Provide support with compiling stories for story bank that can be used across internal reports and grant reports. 
  • Assist with the design of different outreach documents (training resources, presentations, newsletters, and annual reports, etc) using Canva and following IRC branding guidelines.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Student will learn about immigration and legal services available to unaccompanied children, asylum seekers, and Afghan families.
  2. Student will develop problem solving skills and communication skills via email, Teams, and other platforms.
  3. Student will learn how to effectively review documentation, research, draft compelling stories, and summarize resources for legal services teams and donors. 
  4. Student will learn how to use Canva and other tools to update annual reports, training resources, and other outreach materials within established content guidelines and deadlines


Qualifications:

  • May be located anywhere in the US and must be willing to work remotely. 
  • Undergraduate or graduate level studies in social work, library or information science, women and gender studies, nonprofit management, or a related social justice field.
  • Language proficiency strongly preferred in Spanish
  • Strong desire to help vulnerable populations including: unaccompanied children, asylum seekers, Afghan paroles and families, etc
  • Ability to work independently and with high attention to detail
  • Competency in Microsoft Office 365 and online research. Some experience with either Canva or Airtable, a plus.
  • Exceptional communication skills, especially in remote environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Patience, understanding, flexibility, and an unceasingly positive attitude.
  • Willing to learn about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts.
  • Adhere to IRC policies, particularly those related to confidentiality and client privacy.
